The Black Swan
Silver Street
MaryGate
Wakefield

Wakefield. The Black Swan.JPG
City Centre. the Black Swan. 2.jpg

The only 'jettied' building left in Wakefield
The building dates back to 1500s, & follows the 'Yard'

Scroll down to the 2nd picture, & mouse-over, the building disappearing out of the left, is revealed, as it its predecessor; a timbered 16th century structure
Wakefields varying Councils despoiled lots of buildings, it could have rivalled York, due to its historical nature

EDIT @ 17:45
Sorry use this to scroll

Is it listed richard?

Why do you think it's architecturally interesting?

Edit, reference to the gaping goose, keep getting overtaken by other posts this morning.

The rear of the building, has a slightly macabre history (taken from the front of the Cathedral)
It was a Cholera pit, in the times of the disease
I have had two, independent persons, tell me of the cellars walls partially collapsing in the late 70's/early 80's, exposing bones

It is on official record, as a 'Cleansing pit' (implication of Quick-lime??) in this document

Section 5.0, PRN 4143:

Alice Hawthorne
Nun Monkton
(off A59, between A1 & York)

The largest Village Green in the UK, if I recall apparantly, & a gorgeous village too

Name explained, between the pictures of the Chicken & the 'Beer tin'

Chequers
Ledsham

For a long time, barred from a 7-day licence, due to the (alleged) story that drunken farm-labourers berated a local Land-Owners (or a person of note anyway) wife, on her way to Church
Her husband was also the local Magistrate, so removed the Sunday section of the licence

History here; http://thechequersinn.com/history/

Rides. Snow. 2.JPG

This sign is also in-situ outside its car-park (opposite New Road; the hill towards Newthorpe & 'Squires')

Oh!!, & the nearby Church is more than 1200years old, at its oldest sections

Old Red Lion
Water Lane/Meadow Lane

Early 1800's build, & it was well-known as a coaching inn
Water Lane starts at the side (to right), despite its later 'carving-up' by the present course of Neville Street.
Most people believe/assume it starts as the junction on Neville Street, near the Bridgewater Place building

Apparantly, it is well-renown for being haunted by a previous LandLord

NB; 'Secret Leeds' is a fantastic forum/site for anyone with interest in the City of Leeds, & its surroundings
The level of knowledge is almost scary

I post on it occasionally (same name as on here, no pseudonym)

Mexborough Arms
Newmarket Lane
HunGate (Methley)

Not really anything special, just convereted from a row of cottages, but...……
I remember my mum & dad taking me there as a kid, into the beer-garden (I was probably about 10 - now 52)

It had the same Landlady from then, until it closed due to a fire in 2015 (she died later in Hospital)
Still boarded up, I believe
