Seriously though, it sounds nice, but without the choice of coming back, the reality could probably end up being quite horrific once you were there. I mean, I'd like to go, but only if I could come back home at the end.

That's it for me as well. I think I would actually like to go, but the fact of never being able to return would be an incredibly daunting prospect. Not something I think I could cope with well. Immigrating to a different country like Australia or New Zealand is quite a big move for most people, but to a whole different planet in which not one single human has ever been. You will probably never see your friends and family again, you will probably never cycle, play tennis/football, drive a car etc. I think it would take beyond the first few crews to go up and die before it actually starts to get properly habital like earth is now.

I wouldn't want it 'properly habitable like Earth', that would spoil a great opportunity to make it right.

No doubt the first settlers will be burning oil and polluting the ground water just as soon as the first McD and Starbucks opens.

Seriously though, imagine if someone had kids up there, what an utterly bizarre life they'd lead! They would be just a bit zarked up don't you think?.... And on top of that, would they send a selection of different sized space suits, or would the kids have to stay indoors until they were much older?
Besides, imagine just how messy toilet training would be in zero gravity!!

Annyway, I'd love to be a fly on the wall when the second crew arrive, I bet the first would be utterly bonkers already!!

The thought of neve rreturning is daunting to us because we have lived on earth. Perhaps these astronauts should be bred especially for this life and know no other before they go. Or be born on th espace ship on th eway out there. That way the mental trauma of 'this is it' wouldnt exisit.
