Don't get me started on 'connected devices'! Yes yes, I am sure they have their uses, some more so than others, and people with them love them but I can only chuckle at the thought of a connected fridge with an associated app. Makes me think of Red Dwarf's talking toasters!

Btw, I was a techie geek once upon a time. Less techie now but still geek leanings.

Shut up and take my money 🤑

Except for a “good coat of looking at” at intervals.

That's the equivalent of checking the battery level before setting off.

Hi folks, I don’t know if it’s just me or others feel the same way. Just to give you the context the other day I was watching videos on YouTube about bike servicing and came across one which was specifically dedicated towards the types of greases to be used on different components! It was almost 45 minute duration video whereby the presenter explained the difference between greases and their application! It left me wondering why everything has become so complicated? What happened to the simple things in life? While I am not averse to advancement in technology and myself own bike with Di2 as well as bikes with mechanical group set and I know soon we will have wireless brakes too. But seriously do we actually now need to know and own half a million different types of greases out there just to maintain bikes??

You do not need multiple greases for a bike. As long as you use some and don’t leave it too long between applications that they get dirty or a bolt / component seizes etc.

If you've ever had a wireless bike computer giving crazy readings you might have qualms about signal interference affecting your wireless brakes. Is wireless gear changing prone to this, I wonder?

Luddites!

Most techy things do more, cost less (in real terms) and entertain, educate, and amuse us.

And they still have an off switch.

I'll leave you to your rod-braked, cotter-pinned, Ever Ready lit bike with its steel rims that cost a week's wages.

Would not be the first time I’ve looked at Google Maps to find I am on the East side of the A19 - despite standing in front of a sign that says ‘Tollerton’.

I think a cable would give you warning - fraying or poor lever action.

Yes, if you checked regularly you'd pick up on stuff like that. And in any case if one went mid ride you've still got the other!

Worse case scenario and both went simultaneously, which is highly unlikely, then the only other option available is to use the sole of your cycling shoe rammed against your front tyre, just like when we were kids, though it might be tricky with cleats, lol.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I would sooner be called a “Luddite” than “gullible”.

Just to play devil's advocate. There's no backup for a snapped cable either.

That's true
but cables last a fair while and should (critical word there) last a long time and show before they fail

batteries have a short(ish) life in use and cannot be accurately predicted in terms of life left

I heard on a cycling show (TdF or something ) an article about the life of a cycle tech/mechanic
part of his job was changing the batteries on the bikes every day!

You do not need multiple greases for a bike.
A while back, there was a bike mechanic type on YouTube who showed how to do things mechanically with bikes.
The only thing that stuck in my mind was a rack with five or six different greases of varying colours in big syringes for presumably different purposes on a bike.

No.
Wireless shifting is totally bombproof IME.

The only downside is the cost of replacement parts as they wear out.
