So what do the all the members who do not partake of the organised rides do, you know all those that you have not met yet. I bet most go out for bike rides.

Search them out it is often where the good Craig is.

To be honest, no I haven't. I've been put off by the website (stipulations!), plus whenever I've bumped into a club rider out on the road - resplendent in club kit - to a man they've never responded to a "good morning" or even a nod. They seem like a thoroughly miserable bunch! Far too serious for me I think.

I would say either it is a pure racing club or you have not met the true members, do they organise any events, and where are you.

Yes youre probably right! I guess for most of us we join a club and pick the bits that we want to join in with?

I dunno about clubs.

For me, there has to be a social element to a club - and frankly I don't have the time.

Also, you need to commit to some sort of regularity. Which just isn't me.

If the local CC looked like this, I'd be well up for it.

I think many people are are put off clubs without taking the time and effort to get what they want from being a member, shame really.

I have read many horror stories about what goes on in cycling clubs, often written by people who have never been a member of one.

I can get as much or as little social as I want without being committed, which cycling club do you have experience of?

I have experience of other clubs - people are the same whatever the activity its associated with.

I don't want anything from a cycling club, so it doesn't matter. (Unless they have a lovely leather bound club house I can nap in)

I disagree with the first line, how do you know you do not something without knowing what is on offer.

I agree with your opinion on clubs - I think you're picking the wrong person to challenge

I've tried to contact two local clubs, they took forever to respond, they both have three regular rides a week, none of which I want to do. 14-15hrs riding in my commute. Right now the last thing I need is riding in my spare time!

Ive also spoken to two tri clubs, they both meet at locations that are impractical for me to attend.

Even the local running club - I go to two meets per year, in three years I've never managed more - it's pointless joining!

Clubs can be great, it's just that right now, for me, they don't tick boxes.

No challenging, I just do not want people to get the wrong idea.

Our club has meeting places spread over a 20 mile or even more radius, I am sure plenty are the same.

Well why would they become members of a club that's left them with a horror story?

But in my experience, the most vociferous criticism tends to be from people who did join and left for some reason.

Well, they're not for everyone, a mate of mine just pretty much does the club TT season and nothing else to do with the club.

I go out on Wednesdays with a group. We usually do around 55 miles taking just over 4 hours with a cafe stop half way. The group isn't officially part of a club but this club's members turn up.http://www.northlancsrc.org.uk/ You aren't asked to join the club, though if you want to go out on the other club run rides you have to join. It costs £14 a year from the date you join. I've been going out with them for 4 months. Maybe in a few months i'll fancy going on the official "harder" rides and i'll join up but at the moment i like the "slow group" rides. The good thing about the group is political talk is banned so we don't fall out with each other. The bad thing is that even the slightest swearing is frowned upon. Not so easy when some #!@t in a car gives you some grief!
