That took him a while to set up...

Velomobile corner at Richmond. This was 20 mins after midnight, with my shift starting at midnight. No marshalling to do as no one moving , so did bike park security as was dressed for being outside overnight in storm Floris.

I say bike park security but bikes were spread so wide it involved patrolling the whole of the back of the school including the sports field and tennis courts and a wooded area, and half the inbound route from entrance.

Only five VMs in total this time I think (according to those on the German velomobilforum)?

Perhaps he had no alternative but this comes across as an utter train wreck - was there literally no contingency in place? Someone asked about a time extension and they got shut down rather decisively. I suspect Audax Club Parisienne would have had to agree a time extension and knowing the way the Audax organisations seem to operate, it'd be a mountain to move... People have invested a shoot ton of time and money to participate on this ride and to abort it without any transparent discussions seems pretty unfair. I feel sorry for all the volunteers and riders.

It's nothing to do with ACP. LRM were involved in discussions, but the eventual decision was, and had to be, the organiser's. Given the extreme weather in the north there was no alternative but to cancel.

The volunteers and the riders, as far as I saw, were universally supportive of the decision.

I'm sure I saw a lot more in 2017. Did the change to mandatory route make them less viable?

I did see two upright elliptical bikes south of Northstow. Pretty much the exact opposite of one of these.

I was one of the 1000+ overnighters in Richmond on Monday night, and what I saw was extremely impressive management of an unprecedented situation. Yes, the food queues became horrendous, yes we slept on floors wherever there was a space, but we were fed and we slept, and communication from the organisers, via the information screen and announcements, was effective.
The riders too were almost unanimous in our understanding of the decision to cancel, painful as it was, and in our support for the organisers, and the atmosphere was surprisingly cheerful despite the deep disappointment. The worst I heard was some grumbling later about minor details, but no complaints about the overall strategy. In fact, we were all watching the weather forecasts, and by the time of the announcement at 7.30 had largely guessed what was coming.
The LEL organisers and volunteers did an excellent job. On a personal note, I'm very sad that I didn't get to ride Yad Moss and the Scottish loop after so much anticipation, but I hope to be back as either rider or volunteer in 29.

I slept here, on a blanket I found by chance. This is next morning - in the night were crammed like sardines.

Richmond bike patrol in the early hours on Tue (about 2am), still blowing a hoolie once away from the shelter of the school building. Some helmets and other unsecured gear were found over 400m away from the bike park. Luckily they had some reflectives and I picked them up when playing my torch across the dark school fields towards the cricket pitch. bikes were found parked half way up the control inbound route, all around the tennis courts, and spread out into the school playing fields. Bike patrol was a long walk.
Overnight bike patrol I had a fleece and alpine down duvet under my hiviz. Anything less and I’d have been too cold at walking pace. I was one of the team leaders for marshalling. One of our Marshall’s on Monday morning when the rain was biblical and wind blowing away, had to go inside after 30 mins because they were too cold.
We had between 1,000 to 1,250 riders holed up here overnight Mon / Tue.
Thanking you for giving us an insight into the conditions, outside and in, at Richmond.
I rode for about an hour west from Malton, escaping before lock down, and at Sheriff Hutton headed York (due south and quite close) and train (as related above) to Hessle.
There Derek and Ally kept us informed, including of Richmond's 'holding station' predicament and also over a hundred at both Railton VH pop-up and the Mickleton VH pop-up.
I'm told that some locals in the latter village took soaked cold blown riders in.
They also sent their second chef up to Malton to help with ?500 kettled there.
An extraordinarily 'hotel standard' cooked breakfast was served at Hessle before I and many others headed south, before the hordes from Malton arrived.
