That's sobering origamist - esp the sections that have multiple incidents

You can't read too much into KSI map as the number of cyclists (cyclist flow) on any given road is not plotted against the KSIs. However, the collision clusters where they appear are often not that surprising (busy junctions, gyratories, Blackfriars Bridge etc).

Hm, 'tis intersting that gyratories are as bad as they are. I'm kind of shocked (but not that surprised) how many red blobs there are along Essex Road, Upper Street and Theobald's Road. I take back-street routes to avoid all these and am glad I do, now!

I suppose relatively speaking this is also an extended period of time and safety wise cycling is very safe but all these incidents put together like that is depressing. It doesn't surprise me some of the cluster points as they're blackspots

I think I was surprised the number of times that it was a goods vehicle of varying size that was involved - whether it will be weighted towards them in the first place as you may be more likely to have a serious injury or whether its to do with their blind spots I don't know.

My 5 mile regular route to work passes 52 of the sites, and as the data is 2000-2008 it therefore excludes the two cyclist deaths that took place last year.

(There may have been more, but that was the number of ghost bikes I spotted)

What is odd about the data is we know the year, time and day of the week, but what about the month ? 18.00 in June is broad daylight, in December its been pitch dark for hours.

It seems to be missing the cyclist who was pushed off his bike on Shire Lane near Downe - killed I believe.

To be fair, not knowing anyting about the situation, that sounds like assualt. It's nothing to do with a traffic accident, he just happened to be on a bike.
I would guess a similar situation to the cyclist killed in a London Park last year by a loony with a knife. He was just out to kill someone when a cyclist rode past. It could just have easly been anyone else. So it's not really an RTA in the normal sense of the term.

It's a little more like an RTC, given that he was pushed from a moving vehicle.

p.s. please don't use RTA (road traffic "accident"), because they are not accidents. The police have changed their terminology on this for the most part.

You have to keep these things in perspective if you were to look at the bigger picture, you can see that cycling is relatively safe. Indeed, there is very strong evidence that people who cycle regularly live significantly longer, on average, than people who do not. Moreover, to cycle has been shown to be the most effective action a person can take to increase their lifespan, even if they already undertake other physical activity.
