JJ - forgive me for pointing this out - but you're in Chislehurst. Hardly a hotbed of deprivation. And, despite my confidence of last night, there was looting in Balham. Carphone Warehouse got hit.

This smacks of school holiday stuff, albeit on a larger and nastier scale than we're used to.

My address has nothing to do with my comment. The nightmare will begin if the communities involved loose patience and begin to fight back.

If leafy Chislehurst can attract groups of neighbours (like me) to patrol the streets, then what will the impact be in the "hotbeds" as you put it.

Incidentally, Although I live in Chislehurst, My local town (Bromley) suffered looting, the helicopters were out and police were patrolling my road (and others) at 2.00 in the morning. I agree its kids on holiday (and a good rain storm will probably bring it all to an end), but are you not intimidated by 100 kids attacking your home...I was and that intimidation and associated anger is a catalyst.

Someone sent me an enquiry about a senior position in the company today, and the signature in her email was in three-colour twelve-point Harlow Italic. These are clearly the people that should be shot. As well as the ones named after unapproachable fruits.
dear God above! Say it ain't so!

Bit dull down at the pub?

that was my point. This seems to have less to do with deprivation than it has to do with aspiration - albeit aspiration devoid of morality, wit, style or purpose.

The police policy here and it would appear in London is one of containment rather than anything else. Bringing in the army is not the answer, it has never been the answer in any previous instances and should not be the answer now. Water cannon, tear gas and plastic bullets, now they will get a certain message through, but what happens when a rioter/looter gets killed and the trouble escalates?

Water canon, Army...what will that do to our global standing when these images are flashed around the world, we are already on a financial knife edge, that would tip us over the edge

Perhaps we should all prey for rain, kids dont do rain, they'll revert to their looted xboxes to keep dry

I understand now, but you came across as if my view was not valid, as I lived in some sort of privilialiged area, and as such am detached from these events.

I assure you I am not.

Would it do any worse than the images of an overstretched and underfunded police force failing to contain a bunch of greedy yobs?

rain would be good

And I'm 29, not 34!

yep, it would do a lot worse. Water canon and Army control are images of civil unrest ...or rebellion. This is neither, its kids from sink estates taking the piss

It's been confirmed that geoffrey butler was broken into last night. A team sky replica pinarello bike with Di2 worth over £7,000 was stollen along with 4 pinarello frames and around 4 complete bikes.
Bike plus and cycle king where also looted, luckily bike plus is pretty well secured and they only managed to get two bicycles. Cycle King how ever is meant to be completely empty today, and they have over 100 bicycles on the shop floor.

That's some aspiration - acquisition through minimum effort (work / pay), except through violent or aggravated theft
