Been out the last two weekends finally getting in some miles on my road bike. I managed 24 miles last weekend and on Saturday i did my longest ride yet, about 36 miles. Averaged somewhere between 16 and 17mph, which is pretty good considering i had a few short stops to take a few pics.
Decided to try the back road from greenock to Largs. Bit of a climb and the wind was freezing although the sun did come out on occasion. My bike was running like a dream after getting it serviced at Smooth Wheels in Largs.

It was a good ride but towards the end i was feeling the hills and of course i got caught in a quick shower. Commuting on my mtb during the winter has improved my fitness in leaps and bounds. DSCN4791.JPG

Spango Valley and Moor Road, I gather from the pictures. I am actually doing both roads tomorrow (is my plan). But from Paisley t/r over Dalry and back again over Kilmacolm.

The Old Largs road between Loch Tom and Largs is great (from the Largs side). Give that a try.

Well done on your progress, but don't let concern for your average speed prevent you from stopping for a few photos along the way. Looking back at the photos will continue to give pleasure long after you have forgotten your average speed on the day.

An average of 16/17 mph over that route is extremely good going IMHO! Maybe you are a bit younger and/or fitter than me, but I reckon on 12/13 mph average when I climb from Largs to Loch Thom, then down to Inverkip and back to Largs via Skelmorlie and the Meigle Road.

Yes, I would not be bothered about the average speed. Do more long tours than breaking the sound barrier. Enjoy the scenery and the roads in the area on many hours long rides.

My own average speed ? I could not care less. I just enjoy the many hours long rides in this area. Not to mention the seafront in Largs. I am looking forward to tomorrow.

I did find the road from Largs back into Greenock harder but it was a good ride. Hopefully next time there won't be that bloody freezing wind :-)
I def think commuting during the winter is paying off now...

If you are really into it; both Rothesay and Dunoon offers good bikeriding. In particular the ride between those two places over Loch Striven. The sadly ignored Cowal Peninsula offers some very hard & rewarding bikeriding. More attention should be given to Cowal Peninsula and I can see a mission there..
