I started having problems with my knee after getting knocked over while dancing too aggressively at a Meteors concert about 30 years ago, long before I started doing any serious bike riding. In fact I never had problems with my knee on the bike. My loose bit of cartilage would sometimes rear its ugly head and lock my knee as I was cocking my leg over my bike but if anything my cycling helped my knee. I think its better that strong muscles take the strain rather than bones and joints.
So the lesson here is don't get too carried away if one finds oneself at a Meteors concert then .
I'm pleased the cycling helped & wasn't the cause.

Nigel-YZ1 & all the others that have replied with knee problems, can you put those problems down to anything specifically or was it just bad luck, with hindsight would you or could you have done anything different or were your knees going to give you problems in time no matter what?
Only asking in case there are lessons to be learnt or warnings not to be ignored, it just might help someone else.

In my case, I have had an orthopedic problem since birth, worked long hours standing or walking for 30 years.
Nothing to do with cycling

I'm chuffed to bits with myself today.
For anyone that's seen my posts over time, I used to be a 52 week and year rider. 30+ miles on TPT etc, at dawn in all conditions, you get the idea (yes I was barking!). That ended when I wrecked my knees big time. Cue lots and lots of pain then physio. I was told early on I may never ride again.

Anyhoo, today I cracked 21.5 miles from Kilnhurst to Wigfield Farm between Dodworth and Worsborough.

It's one of those milestones I never though I'd manage again.

Where would we be if we couldn't get out and fly? :wahhey:

Nice one and not far from me in Silkstone. Up for a group ride sometime ?

Nicely done, especially with the hills around Kilnhurst! I had knee worries a few of years ago mainly caused by playing squash and running. Cycling was the only exercise I could manage and after 3 years of 25 miles a day, I'm just about recovered despite the cartilage (or lack of it) in my right knee. The muscle takes most of the weight from the 'problem area'. Obviously my injury pales next to yours, but cycling has done me the world of good.

That is a good question. One I've asked myself a lot of times since.
A single ride brought the problems to a head it seems. I went out on a wet, muddy January day to Cusworth Hall at Doncaster. I had a rear wheel puncture, which I had to keep topping up as the gunk didn't seal it. I was an idiot not to just walk instead. I thought I was ok apart from a sharp pain through both knees. An hour after I got home I couldn't walk.
Doctor just told me to go home and put my feet up for 3 months. Couldn't give a toss.
I was hauling myself up stairs at work with my arms as I couldn't bend my knees. My employer didn't give a toss either.

Another doctor realised something was wrong later and fast tracked me onto sports physio in Wath and finally at Badsley Moor Lane, Rotherham. By then muscle had gone, so I had knee tracking problems and chronic patellar bursitis to add to it.

I insisted on seeing a specialist this year. He told me all seems ok now. I may have torn both cruciates, it's very possible I've worn the cartilage off the back of both kneecaps, which would explain the recurring pain if I go too far.

I used to do long rides, I never got out of the saddle on hills much, I didn't cover the knees until it got really cold (don't like leggings), I didn't do much stretching, I've been riding since I was 4. I've been a lone rider most of the time, so wouldn't know if I was doing anything wrong. I don't know really.
