I also found it much harder to get off trains carrying two things (bag and bike) rather than just one.
At least for that there's a solution: There are a couple of backpacks available for the carrier block in the meantime. I created an overview recently, still there are some missing including all the offerings from Aliexpress and alike. It is in German, but Google translate may help:

Personally I am using the Lumabag Urban Traveller and like it a lot. Perfect if you don't have to carry a lot of stuff. Also, the new backpack from Brompton looks potentially appealing: https://www.brompton.com/shop/bags/borough-waterproof-backpack-graphite
How much, £299 for a bag? I'm sure its wonderful, but you could hire a taxi for that to follow you around.
