Avoid the last one , its awful and those brakes are next to useless as they come on kiddies bikes and dont do a lot .
The decathlon would be my choice for that sort of distance as your not going to be much quicker on a road bike based hybrid like the other two over the distance you intend to ride.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I'd echo the Decathlon. Avoid the Apollo.

The Real Clifton one interests me though, but it's only got 6 gears.

They're all pretty basic.

The looks of the Real Clifton is what attracts me to it. But if the Decathlon one is better, then i will probably get that one.

Can i ask though, what makes the Rockrider 300 better than other £100 bikes? i've seen it recommended not only here, but on other threads and sites.

Also i kind of wanted a hybrid/road bike because it is supposedly a smoother ride (compared to mtb's). is that not really the case at this price bracket?

also what is the difference between the rockrider 5.0 and the 300?
err , nothing as far as i can see.
Road bike wheels are supposed to roll better , especially the less knobbly tyres roll quicker than the MTB type but the gear range on the clifton is rather limited compared to the rockrider which you could always stick some slicker tyres on like city jets for £12 each or you could consider .

Yes i know its more than your original budget but your getting a lot better bike with mudgaurds which are a real must for commuting as it keeps the spray off your back and helps keep your feet a bit drier as you get no end of spray off the front wheel .
I have a carrera subway for winter riding and its only maybe 5 mins slower max over a 10 mile each way commute compared to my commuting road bike .

@per4 with a budget like that its going to be tight

couple of questions , how tall are you or what size ?

where are you based ?

i have a couple of bikes at mo but lowest is around the £145 area once i have finished doing work required on it , the others are £200 upwards

if local feel free to drop round and try them to get an idea of size and type required but all of mine are road bikes at mo

@smokeysmoo will do you a deal on a very nice road bike if you are tall

I'm in this market as well, my commute is 2 miles I have very few needs, I already own a nice road bike, I bought a single speed but then I injured my knee and starting and going up hill without gears is not good on it.

Can I buy the BTWIN from a shop anywhere in the Liverpool area?

@biggs682 thanks for the help and offer.

but after visiting the decathlon store today and trying out some bikes, ive decided to spend around 200-250 for a brand new road bike. now just in the process of deciding which one to get.
