Sounds like a good trip, I did a bit of it N to S a few years ago.
If you go from GoF to Newton Stewart you can go through forrestry roads (really good and virtually no traffic) a few challenging climbs! past Glentrool to Crosshill, Maybole, coast road to Ayr (via the Electric Brae) or cut off west from NS to Barrhill, Girvan, Maidens, Ayr.
From Ayr you could take the cycle path all way to Glasgow, via Irvine and Kilwinning. Or at Irvine take the traffic-free route to Kilmarnock (direct trains to Carlisle) or cycle on path on A77 to Glasgow.
