Despite the urge to get a titanium frame for audax and long distance riding, after a road test on a Trek Domain SL5 disc last week I'm sorry to say that the ride on the Domain was unbelievably smooth and oh so comfortable and as such knocked the Ti urge into a closed corner.

So after thinking about it all over the weekend, the order goes in tomorrow for a Trek Domain SL8 disc, and while I have no prior experience with Trek bikes, it was one of those brands that I never thought I would ever own and was until fairly recently was totally omitted from my radar.

But with 32mm tyres and the ability to run proper full mudguards and a life time warranty on the frame, whats not to like?

I like!

Hey do you know if that bike can take a rack as well as mudguards? Idk what an SL8 is in the ranks but if a lower end model can take fenders and rack then I might look into that too.

Like most carbon framed bikes it does not have the capacity to fix a rack as it doesn't have the eyelets on the seat stays. And I don't know if you could put a mono rack on that attaches to the seat post either?

The SL8 shares the exact same frame as the SL5, its the groupset and wheels that shave another +3lb from the overall weight.

Nice bike but ouch the price would rule it out for me.

Well, yes it is a tad expensive sort of. However, for me to build a Ti framed bike up to the exact same spec would be in excess of £6k. Also when compared to the Specialised Roubaix with the same groupset, its £1.5k cheaper?

Mind you, I plan on changing the wheels for a pair of Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon disc wheels......

I had them going "spare" after buying them for my Kinesis GF Ti frame build last February that subsequently went back to the factory thanks to a missing weld on the bottle boss? Promised a turnaround in 4 to 6 weeks, money refunded after 7 months waiting, great customer service....NOT!:gun:

It may be old news now but have they sorted out the issues with the bb90 bearings?

The bearings sit directly in the frame. With time they would wear down the bottom bracket shell. Treks answer was to then send out very slightly oversized bearings rhat would fit the now larger diameter bottom bracket shell. I don't know what happens once they wear the frame down.

It may be old news and fixed now. Plus with a lifetime guarantee your frame is covered but I would still do a bit of digging regarding, just in case....

Nope its not old news and it is a factor that I'm still not 100% sure about to be honest and yes the answer is still to use a slightly over size bearing, and if that doesn't work then its a new frame, on the plus side its covered under warranty.
