My initial reaction is that I think the assailant should be charged with attempted murder. However I'm sure that their will be a lot of reasons why this will not happen and no doubt some of them are quite valid. Nevertheless when this chap is caught if he is not at least charged with something very serious it will send a message out to all disgruntled drivers that a cyclists life is worth little enough for it to be worth considering mowing them down if they get in your way.

I would also hope that in addition to a serious charge and hopefuly a sentence that was apropriate that he would neverbe alowed to drive again. I just don't think that someone who is that unstable can ever really be trusted to drive again and needs to be kept from being in a position where he could end someones life with the twitch of a steeringwheel.
