I wouldn't say you were delusional just because you like to create, and live by, your own definitions of words. The dictionary doesn't happen to agree with you, and neither, I daresay, would very many other cyclists, most of whom would maintain they are participating in 'sport' whether they compete or not. The fact that you announce unilaterally that we all know you are right is a little flaky, I'll admit, but I wouldn't go so far as to call you delusional. Just a bit misguided.

ha ha - I see what you did there - you pretended that comment wasn't aimed at you. My kids do that...

Like I said earlier, if believing that you are a 'sportsman' gets you up in the morning then I'm genuinely pleased for you. However, your claim that I live by 'my own definition of words' is mildly ironic, given your own somewhat desperate devotion to the OED.

What I will say is that there are plenty of references out there which define sport as a 'competitive' activity. If you don't believe me, try phoning 'Sport England', explain to them what you do and ask them for some funding (here's a tip: hold the phone away from your ear while they laugh). But the OED reference obviously suits you, so that is clearly the one you should cling to.

I can't even remember what the thread is about anymore - oh yes, magazines. They're all rubbish.

We writers and our dictionaries - silly isn't it? You wonder why they publish the things anymore, when it is so much easier to make up your own definitions as you go along. Literacy is so passé

I wondered when you'd bring that up. I know, it's shocking. Speaking as a trained and time-served news journalist it makes you wonder why anyone would ever look beyond the OED for an alternative source of information....

It depends on the information you are looking for, I suppose. When it comes to definitions of words in the English language the OED is pretty authoritative. I suppose you disagree?

Well, I just dug out my own OED (probably older and less well-thumbed than yours) where 'sport' is defined as a 'game or competitive activity' - so perhaps we can now get into a pointless debate about which version of the same reference book is the more authoritative. Or maybe we should dig up Samuel Johnson and ask him?

Anyway look - your OED says you are a 'sportsman' and because of that, you think you are participating in a 'sport' - that can only be a good thing. I'm sorry my view isn't the same as yours, I really am.

Actually my edition OED doesn't mention me at all.

I think you might be being a bit ingenuous with your use of the dictionary. I am using the two volume ironically named Shorter Oxford Dictionary and I would bet that the definitions in mine are the same as yours. The idea of competition as pertains to 'sport' doesn't appear until much further down, in the third definition. It is not mentioned at all in the first. And I imagine that is the same in mine as it is in yours. What does the first - the first - line in your version say? Fess up.

The 'first line' is as I typed it earlier = Sport n. game or competitive activity usually involving physical exertion. I can take a pic if you like - although doing that would be bordering on insanity. Can we stop now..?

I used to subscribe to What Mountain Bike - but when they ran an article on "Budget Forks" and the cheapest forks reviewed were £600 I cancelled my subscription!
The car I owned at the time cost less than that......

Pro Cycling if you follow racing. CW is just a sportive magazine now and has all but abandoned the domestic racing scene.

I find that general interest mags like C+ have a maximum life of about two years, after that you've read it all before, it's just the same old stuff re-hashed.

I subscribed to C+ for a year or so but cancelled after realising that I had at least 6 copies still in the plastic wrapping and gathering dust  Always the same and not very original.

I like cycling fitness. Only comes out quarterly but it's nice that it doesn't try to shove gear down your throat. Have a feeling it may get rehashed after awhile but am enjoying it so far.

As an aside my girlfriend had a degree in nutrition and also thinks the articles are good

Buying a UK cycling mag here in Norway costs in excess of a tenner!

So, when back visiting Blighty, I always make a visit to WH Smith's and grab a handful of cycling mags: C+, CW, Pro Cycling, Cycling Fitness, Cycling Active, in addition to mags bought here or in Sweden.

I'm embarrassed to say I have over 20 unread mags, still in their plastic covers, going back to 2009!

And as Smoking Joe says, after a couple of years, the content just gets re-hashed with different pictures.

Let's see how many I succumb to buying next week when I'm over for 8 days prior to a long holiday! :headshake:

How much does it cost to Oldham?
