Alright it's once a week, but that is an impressive time considering he's going over the Pennines.

According to Google Maps it takes 43 minutes via the M62 Motorway - same distance. He's doing it in 90. I think it's worthy of news.

Not all news has to be bad news.

It is,it would take me over two hours.

And not a bad pace either, one hour and a half isn't bad for a 28 mile commute over the Pennines.
+1! My one and only commute was 8 miles less than that and I didn't make that time.

I had the same reaction as you Fossyant. Most people think 10 miles is a long way, especially when I tell that this is what my 5 year old daughter will do on a Sunday out on the bike.

56 miles as a commute is in the upper end of commuting distances and its a better story "The dad who drives 300 miles a day to get to work" which we've all no doubt seen.

It doesn't say much about his route except he takes the A640 which I'm guessing takes him via Denthead, and while its a slog both ways its more persient moorland than what you might traditionally associate with Pennine climbing. Not wishing to diminish the effort at all.

It's just two ways of looking at it.

The newspaper looks at the fact that its in the day, you look at it that its only once a week.

Its like the Sun and the Mirror reporting on an aspect of Government policy, it'll be the same thing in essence

(not that I'm comparing you to a Sun writer, but at least I didn't say Daily Mail eh?)

It's once a week - what do the TV adverts say....... try it. save co2........

Don't knock it......... it's positive news...........

Just before I changed to my current job, I started the 32 mile each way commute once a week - sick of stuck in traffic (as a long time cyclist).....

Folk at work thought I was superman - nope I was just a weekend warrior, that was once a race cyclist, but job/life had put on 2.5 stone...... I wasn't happy, my nice bikes weren;t getting used.

Anyway did it, but it was a long day - out at 6 am, back about 7 pm, sticking to rigid office hours - was hard - got moaned at by my wife....

Decided enough was enough, then had to convince my wife that commuting everyday was beneficial again (got banned some years previously because of injuries sustained commuting)..... moved jobs, to somewhere within the magic 10 miles - sorted  - injury pattern continues though.....

Don't knock this publicity...... it helps......... bet the guy would like to do it every day, but the time commitment isn't funny, especially if you can't leave work on time.

Oh dear, what injuries were those? Not caused by other road users I hope.

if every motorist just cycled in 1 day a week, can you imagine the difference???

About a fifth less traffic? Unless they all chose to cycle in on the same day!!

Actually, deeper than that, they'd all start to be more considerate to cyclists, and probably fitter, therefore keener to cycle on other days of the week instead.

Time to make it law, I think....

Love some of the responses to the article:

"Me dad used to cycle 20 miles a day. By friday he were a long way from home."

and

"He's a wonderful example to the lazy bu&&ers who can't even be bothered to get up on time to sign on in Brown's Beaten Britain. " There's always one.
