Maths - bar method -stumped

P= 288
A=432
LS= 360

We know p=288
So p+a= 792

We also know p-a=2(ls-a)
So 288-a = 2ls -2a
Gives 288= 2ls-a
Gives a=2ls-288
Substitute above equation gives
3ls=1080

You can then solve all

It's probably worked out differently nowadays with rounding & stuff :blush: Maths was my subject at school, but when i recently tried helping with homework I just confused matters even more, as methods of teaching/calculation have changed quite a bit in the last 30 or so years :laugh:
Thanks. How did you work that out? We need to show bar method working.
I have absolutely no idea what the 'bar method' is but that is a simple problem to solve ...

L + A + P = 1080

A = 288

Therefore (1) L + P = 1080 - 288 = 792

(P - A) = 2 x (L - A)

Rearranging ...

2L - P = A

(2) 2L - P = 288

Add (1) and (2) ...

L + P + 2L - P = 792 + 288

so 3L = 1080, L = 360

And P = 792 -360 = 432

A = 288, L = 360, P = 432

Divide those by 72 ... A : L : P = 4 : 5 : 6

Or putting it another way ...

Bloody @Markymark beat me to it while I was typing my reply! :laugh:

I've never heard of "the bar method". Can anyone explain the question.

I have a maths degree so can easily get the answer, but by simple algebra rather than whatever the bar methid may be

You mixed up Prasad and Amir

Anyway, that kind of money is pocket change for Londoners, innit?

BTW, a quick google suggests the "Bar Method" is something developed in Singapore to aid the teaching of mathematics

I see others have already provided the answer, such a shame as I was just readying myself to tell you the answer...

thanks - now I know what the bar method is, it looks like you need to solve the problem using simple algebra then draw a to-scale "bar" to represent each answer.

Not sure how this helps though
Just spent ages with the boy on this. I can't even get to an equation, let alone work it out using the bar method. I did A-level maths all those years ago, and he's in year 10. Any maths experts on here?...

Lee Suan, Amir and Prasad shared £1080. Amir received £288. The difference between Prasad and Amir was double that of the difference between Lee Suan and Amir. In what ratio did they split their money, and how much did each person get?
Ok let's have a crack.

S+a+p=1080
A=288
The difference d = s - a
Consequently,
P = a + 2d
Also
S = a + d

Hmm or you could just say that
1080 - 3*288 = 864.
1080-864 = 216.
216/3 = 72, which is the difference.

So,
A = 288
S = 360
P = 432

You can donthe ratios from there.
