It sounds to me as if you could do with something a little more powerful than a spreadsheet. Have you tried using a database? Even a desktop database like Microsoft Access would be better than Excel - it can remove duplicate entries with a single query, and it would almost certainly be faster in the long run, if you plan to maintain the list.

Ok, just to make clear, AbelianGrape's formula is what you want. What my post does is a general formula that includes the n(n+1)/2 case as well as your case. It is overkill but i had too much time on my hands...
