He is starting on Friday and should be in York on Monday/Tuesday I think.

I reckon Arch and the mob at work should join him on their Maximus trikes.

Dammit!

I'm not in York next Monday and Tuesday!

I might mention it to the guys though...

It would be good to include in that some publicity. Maybe letting the support crew know in advance and then having the St. Nick's trikes escort him into the city Monday night and then out on Tuesday Morning.
It'll look good on TV and show that big cargo trikes are not just instruments of torture, they can collect recycling at the same time!

I might be able to get to ride with him for a bit of support on day 8. He is following the A10 from Cambridge into London, so i may get to follow him from around Enfield/Ponders End area.

It's the kind of thing they'd love to show on The Show of an evening..

Just been out to see him, he is certainly hurting that is for sure. I was told by the first aid outriders that he is starting at 6am each day, I would say he will not finish until about 10.30 tonight. The rickshaw is huge and extremely heavy, all credit to the guy.

I was absolutely incensed tonight. Matt is in sever pain and finished around midnight last night. Arguably his medical advisers should pull him out of the event to prevent long term damage.

However he was unable to start this morning "because his support team had to have 10 hours rest". He is doing 14 hours a day on a bike in pain and they can't start unless they have enough sleep (the poor souls).

Words fail me. (Well they don't, I could go on for ages, but I won't bore you).

I agree it seems rough, but I suppose it depends on what the support team are doing? If there's driving involved, it may be a legal thing. He may be doing it out of the goodness of his heart, but they may well be working, and therefore subject to working time rules.

Or it may be a way of forcing him to rest, if he's so determined that he won't listen to advice.

Are there any stats on the rickshaw? I just know it's not a Maximus. I know a lot of Maximus riders (me included, although I'm at the very low end of the fitness scale), and they ride really quite nicely - heavy yes, but free rolling. Uphills are slow, but on the flat, unladen, they aren't so much worse than a heavy bike and downhill, well, there the fun starts! Of course, we rarely get into double figures mileage in a working day (one of my colleagues sometimes does 10 miles in a day, half of that laden with up to 150kg), so I appreciate there's a huge difference in that respect.

What he is doing does seem to be well beyond heroic and approaching the just plain daft. I hope he is not doing long term damage to his frame - or elsewhere! I wonder if the stunt was not just misconceived given the weight and size of the trike. We have chipped in a fiver each in the hopes we can make it worthwhile in sponsor terms at least.

One report I heard said the rickshaw was 25 times heavier than a normal road bike. If the average bike is 10Kg then the rickshaw is 250Kg.

That must be with two people in the back surely?
