Surely you know what that means?

I might do.

I have always been puzzled by the expression, 'You cannot have your cake and eat it.' Well, no, but what's cake for if not eating it. It is like saying 'You cannot eat your cake twice.' Well, yeah, that is the nature of food.

Once you have eaten your cake, you no longer ‘have it’ to dispose of as you will. A cake is a raft of potentialities - it can be a thank you, a bribe, an apology, a social occasion - but once eaten, those are gone.
Hark at me - once I couldn’t even spell ‘filosofa’. Now I are one.

Well, I believe in eating your cake as soon as you have it. Otherwise it might go stale. Jamaica cake never lasted very long in my flat.

New maxim: you cannot keep your cake for long without it going stale so eat it now.
