Lendal Tower, aka Turrim Sancti Leonardi, (c1300 AD) on York's old town wall, a sort of mini castle. There is dumpy wee tower on the other bank (second pic). This is the North Street Postern Tower, aka the Barker Tower, and there used to be a defensive chain across the Ouse between the two towers - part of the city's defences that could be overcome by the payment of a toll.

Glenveagh castle - not a real castle really, built c1860 as a status symbol by John George Adair, who wasn't a very nice man. He evicted (along with the help of the local constabulary) an estimated 161 people out into the snow of April 1861 to clear the estate to turn it into a hunting reserve for his rich cronies. Some died, some went to the workhouse, some emigrated. I believe Adair died before it was all completed, but his American wife continued to come here until about 1920.

The next owner went out for a walk one day in 1933 and never came back, and he was never found! It's always been a source of mystery and speculation.

The third owner signed it over to the state in the 1980s.

I'm taking the liberty of including chateaux in this thread.

MBIFO the chateau du Hardouin (just outside Augan, 56800).

Not particularly old - appears to date from 1848 - although (confusingly) parts of it may date back to the 16th century.

I suspect that the French rich. like their British counterparts, had a tendancy to patch their country seats rather than totally demolish and start again. It gave them a misguided but comforting sense of continuity and entitlement.
