I was sent to an Approved School at age 12. In three years I absconded best part of 20 times and hitch hiked around the country. In school I was well behaved and cooperative but once the itchy feet started that was it, I was off on my travels. I used to get caned and locked up in solitary for a few weeks when I was returned, but wasn't long before I was off again. I had other issues that caused problems but I was never given a label or a diagnosis. I wasn't ill. I had made a decision that I wasn't going to accept what was happening to me and I didn't, at least until it suited me. Most lads were out in 18 months, I did the full three years and they never broke me. I wonder what they would make of it nowadays.

There is a cure for all of these disorders, ODD, ADHD, ADD all of them.

It was around when I was a youngster but is sadly no longer available. What was it called?

Borstal. It was what made us behave and stay on the right side of the law when we were growing up. sort of.

His whole life was ruined was it? And then he had to go and work with you. Couldn't catch a break could he.

They'd give you a pill.

Which is the upside of this. If GSK & co come with a drug that will make my 2-year-old eat his greens, stop saying 'No' automatically to any question, and throwing stuff about the apartment I'll be first in the queue.

Borstal wouldn't work nowadays. Borstal worked by the screws being bigger and harder bas**rds than the inmates. Disobey an order, give a screw some lip and you were in line for a good beating.

Nowadays screws wouldn't be allowed to touch the poor misunderstood children, probably even raising a voice would be classed as abuse. That is why Borstal wouldn't work.

I don't often wander in here but tonight have been unfortunate enough to do so.

As a parent of a young man with special needs who has, and will, require support his entire life I have to say I've not read such ill-informed nonsense for a very long time. Bitch all you like about modern thinking and diagnosis but if you've no idea of the reality try thinking twice.

I had thought society was changing, sadly not it seems.

Unfortunately there is a tendency for people to type a right lot of bollocks. They seem to read the 'papers or listen to blokes in the pub, and think that this equates to knowing stuff. Such is life, I suppose.

I think that the original purpose of this thread was to point out something entirely different.

It was my fear of screws that made me grow up to be such a fine citizen.
