Charming. Her partner sounds delightful as well.

On another note, I agree with a lot of what a contributor called 'Lord Upminster' writes below the Grauniad piece linked above. The bit about the weird British fetishisation of the motor car strikes a particular chord...

It's [antipathy toward cyclists] a purely Anglo-Saxon (USA-Britain-Australia) thing: in continental Europe it barely exists. I've been cycling and occasionally driving in France for two years now, and although as a driver I've suffered a fair bit of jostling, horn-blaring and tail-gating, on my bicycle I've never experienced the slightest ill-feeling or lack of consideration from motorists: rather the opposite in fact. But then as this recent article explains, the French don't and never have fetished motor cars in the way that the British do: they're simply regarded as a useful artefact on a par with a washing machine or a vacuum cleaner and not as a cultic object or a status indicator.

The trouble is that in British society anyone of driving-licence age still riding a bicycle is regarded as either eccentric or disqualified for drink-driving. There's a vague feeling that in some way they're letting the side down by not driving: metaphorically raising a finger to everything that Middle England holds dearest. Bicycles are for losers, weirdos and continentals.

The driving instructor is just another inevitable bone-headed product of an unpleasant little car sick country.

I'd be bitter too if I'd mis-played the hand life dealt me so badly I ended up working as a driving instructor. Poor dearie.

That's a piss poor comment on what after all is an honest living, fulfilling a worthwhile need and requiring a modicum of skill and training.
Hey, roadsweeping is an honest living, and whilst not an aspirational career choice necessarily, it would also be piss poor to malign someone doing that (important) job too.

Of course, the woman in question is clearly an unpleasant cow, but criticise for that, rather than being of lower status than you.

Christ, I'm somewhere sub-cleaner. I'm the biggest waste of a Masters degree and expensive private education you'll ever meet ,but a) I make no bones about it, and b) don't go round calling entire sectors of law abiding society canutes and wishing death upon them.

I never criticised her for being of lower status than me, because I don't know what her "status" is, or mine for that matter. I was suggesting I'd be bitter too if I had a s***e job that forced me to sit in a car all day. As a cyclist I cant imagine a worse way to spend a working day.
