Last time I looked, I think the missing bit on the BBC is that it doesn't give you the likelihood (probability or percentage chance) of the weather front.

So, if it says rain in 2 hours time you don't know if that means it's practically guaranteed, or there's a 50/50 chance or whatever. They will have some determinations behind the scenes but they need to explain what it is.

I use weather.com which I find pretty good and is very useful as it gives the likelihood or rain, and also the likely strength of the rain too.

I look at the charts they show not whether they stick a rainy cloud symbol on the map. And I follow some weather forecasters twitter accounts where you can get a more technical version (sometimes too technical for me).
