No it's symptomatic of a society that wishes to get to a destination, rather than standing at the side of the road waiting for a recovery truck.

You've rather - in fact, completely - missed my point. Which was that Citroen think that by building something that looks vaguely cute and 2CV like, they're building a new 2CV. Which they aren't, because the old 2CV was more about practicality and economy than anything. Its looks are irrelevant to the job it was designed to do, in contrast to the "new 2CV". In short, there's no reason at all that Citroen can't build a new 2CV that the likes of me approve of, and no reason that it shouldn't be modern and reliable when they do ... but they won't do it by dressing a C3 up in drag and sticking a twat nav and CD player in it.

Best car my dad ever owned was a Ford Corsair, like this, but white. Bench front seats too.

The pic is of a rare 2 door model

We had one (4 door) New in 1964 I think (B Reg) and we had it until 1971 when it was taken off to the scrap yard as it failed the mot for completely rusting out. They don't make em like that any more (thank god).

The traveller was the boggo estate. Or you had the countryman with the decorative wood screwed to the sides.

no, not true

you had the Austin Mini Countryman and the Morris Mini Traveller.

both cars were the same apart from the badges and grille, launched in September 1960, both had wooden trim.

from October 1962 a NON wood version was also available of both cars.

the round nose estates were replaced by the flat front clubman estate in October 1969

My first car in 1977. Rotting subframes, awash with water in heavy rain and bodywork full of filler. Still miss it.......

But were older cars always unreliable? We had one of the first Metros, which was pretty basic, and I don't remember it breaking down any more than my Mum's latest Corsa - only when it throws a wobbly, it takes a computer to fix it. Maybe older cars took a little more care, but maybe if some people had to care more care of their cars, they'd think more when they drove them.

It looks better than it was but a lot of happy memories there

Also a lot of grief - several hours jacked up by the M1 removing a failed petrol pump and fetching a new one, condensers that seemed to fail every month, a no.7 valve that blew because of a cooling design flaw in the engine block, failed thermostats. I always carried a full toolkit with basic spares because breaking down was a regular occurence but this was nothing unusual - all my mates did as well. Lucas components were pants.

I quite like my new car, great for sticking the bikes in the back, goes well, is fun to drive, and makes me laugh a wee bit when I look at it. Obviously not much in common with an original, but then I don't expect it to rust quite so quickly.

Hadn't spotted the 2 door thing... I loved ours, but I was only 9 when we got it. Think it probably drove my dad nuts. But I liked it so much, I still have a toy/model Corsair on my desk at work

Figaro's were actually a K12 Micra - the bubble one that appeared from 92.......although they fetch a nice price second hand these days.............

I had a Rover Metro (yes not re-badged 100) - had the GTa - I was 21....brand new rocket..... no weight, K series 1.4 engine - fast as a Golf GTi....... the GTi Metro was nuts.........(bit too much on the insurance for a 21 year old)....

Shame they started to rust pretty quick - I got rid after 4/5 years - rear wheel arches started to go, despite my 'well known' cleaning/maintenance schedules......

After that, then went Japanese for cars....buy, drive, service, drive..etc.... just like Shimano............ none of this iffy Italian stuff - don't get me started on my company Alfa 147 Selespeed  - electronics and Italians...
