Seems to have the right kind of size and characteristics, and be roughly along one of the arcs that was expected given its last 'ping'... but that's all we can say now.

It's not too hard to explain. If you have the ability to detect what your potential enemies are up to it's best if they are unaware of that.

The classic example is the belief that Germany was unaware that their incoming bombers were detected by radar and did not associate the odd huts and aerials scattered around the South Coast with any such technology. Furthermore, they thought that we were unable to break their cyphers when in fact we (having been tipped off by our Polish allies) were doing so. Using the information was not always easy since it was important not to reveal the capability - the German break-out in the Ardennes was a surprise because very unsportingly they did a lot planning over the telephone and with face-to-face meetings and thus did not let us know what they were up to. Purely by chance: they had not rumbled the secret of the 'Ultra' code-breakers.

Given all the false starts and leads in this thing, I can't imagine the Australians saying anything unless they were pretty sure they were onto something.

Don't know why your all having a go at DM. He never once took the piss take on the fate of the plane like some on here did.He was always with the thoughts on the families and the ones on board .Even the families are getting frustrated at the lack of and different information given to them

I reckon he posted more about guesswork and speculation being 'latest news' and 'fact' than he said 'my thoughts blah blah'... in fact, that seemed like an afterthought.

From the Beeb live updates (I am on my lunch, OK?)

12:42:
ABC News reporter David Wright, who has been on board the a US P-8 Poseidon aircraft, told the BBC's Newshour programme that as soon as the search plane reached the required location - closer to Antarctica than Australia - it became clear that the debris was not to be seen. "It was hopes raised, unfortunately," he said.
