Shocking story, but I am damned if I'd let my kids play out in the street, in October at 7:30pm! Very irresponsible I think. lets hope she's found safe and well.

Probably she should have been in bed but it's a side issue anyway.
If all children her age were in bed by say 7 and were in from playing before 6.30 then the kind of despicable man who would do such a thing would just be looking for an unfortunate victim earlier in the day.

Edit: Assuming it is a man of course. (probability around 99.99% at a guess)

Is there an arbitrary UK wide curfew for small children?

She lived in a tiny place, any crime will be pretty rare never mind a child abduction. Maybe she was due in, maybe she was enjoying herself and was given extra playtime? My kids, at that age, played out until they were too tired to carry on, it's just gone Oct it's not a freezing night in January.

5 years old? its getting dark, or twighlight at best. sorry, but no way would I let my 5 year old daughter wander about in the street, regardless of where i live. but then, maybe I'm being over protective.

Maybe you are maybe you are not. We all parent differently.

It seemed to me, crossing Spain, that 5 year olds didn't come out until it was dark, I doubt if abduction rates are any higher there, I don't really see that "dark" has to a lot do with a child abduction tbh.

I would not let my son who is that age out of my sight, not on a leash hes can play with friends etc as long i have line of sight and can get their asap but he certainly would not be out that late , in bed by 8
