I just filled up my car and it cost me £69.95.
Can anyone top that?
£103 yesterday and the Land Rover has an even larger tank, although it only gets filled about once a year.

No, just a Merc. 70l fuel tanks aren't that uncommon and it is nice to only refuel every 700 miles.

The motorbike, however, still struggles to get £15 worth of fuel, although the rate of consumption is about the same.

I suppose only on a cycling forum do you get people saying petrol is not cheap, it's not, it has gone up massively over the last few years especially and is impacting on millions of people. Big petrol companies and the government are the only people gaining, everyone else is losing out including cyclists.
I haven't. I sail past petrol stations grinning from ear to ear

Interesting about the motorbike. Friend at work has a Piaggio scooter and it costs him £4 to fill the tank.

Doesn't that depend on how much the Fiat is driven?

If it starts.

It becomes more difficult if you have children in school or indeed each have jobs in different places, not impossible, people do it but at some point most people settle into an area, with all that means. You have to have a mighty reason to move, I know I've done it.
Choices can of course be very difficult, but they are still choices. I'm making the general point that those complaining the most are amongst the least willing to do something about it.

Filling the C8 at Tesco the other week cost £108
Just noticed that they've raised the max amount you can buy with 'Pay at the Pump' from £59 to £99 ... sign of the times ....

I need mine because sometimes I want to tow a boat and carry lumpy stuff for pleasure, and can only justify one car which covers fewer annual miles than I cycle and renting isn't economic. Is that OK as a reason? Or do I need to proove I 'need' a boat.

Maybe you do....

When I were a lad my parents owned a Sprite Major Caravan, it was pretty much as big as a family caravan got those days, it could be towed by a large regular saloon/estate car. Nowadays caravans are the size of apartments hauled by 4x4 behemoths. Justified by their occasional need to pull a caravan these beast pollute our roads for the rest of the year.
Our Euro-chums seem to survive well enough without owning vast numbers of 4x4s.
Need to move lumpy stuff? Buy a trailer.
Need to move a boat? Find an alternative?

My point is that just because we can now do something we couldn't do before, doesn't mean we should. Boat moving to justify 4x4 ownership or Caravan towing could fall into that category. All of these things are heading for the last chance saloon anyhow, it's not if, it's when.

There should be two very distinctive categories of vehicles, Personal Transport and Special Purpose; Any vehicle that was special purpose would need to be fitted with the 56mph speed limiters as fitted to HGVs. the definition between the two categories could be set on emission levels (lets say 120g co2/km).

I would guess the large 4x4s, limos, high performance sports cars would soon loose desirability. And
if you really do need a large 4x4 to tow a horse box etc then the 56mph speed limit should not be a problem.

This is a most excellent idea!

The degree to which it is expensive depends on how much you choose to use.
I find road fuel costs me 11-12 pence per mile which is considerably cheaper than comparable modes of transport and a lot more convenient.
Road fuel is cheap.

I find much the same, the diesel estate I have to use for work runs at about 11p per mile. A tank of fuel can get me from Bristol to Edinburgh and back again, for less than a one way ticket on the train (although I'd probably rather be on a train)
