But the higher price of fuel means transport costs go up for the food and other goods you buy so push up all of these costs, so everyone is affected by the higher fuel prices. Or do you not eat?

1. Fuel is a fairly small part of the overall cost of food and goods.
2. Higher fuel prices give a small competitive advantage to food and goods produced more locally.

Dell may have to switch from Prosecco to English sparkling, but that's no great hardship.

Thing on telly last night showing the owner of a haulage company, with umpteen trucks etc.... he said fuel only represented 16% of his total overhead. Like any business, it will be people, by a mile.

So fuel costs are a minor percentage of distribution costs, which in turn are a minor percentage of the retail price.

I think that refutes the argument about expensive fuel making food expensive.
