Heard a bloke on R4 this morning saying he thought the moon landings were faked. He couldn't offer any real argument but kept saying "the evidence is unconvincing". What did he need as evidence? A YouTube video? An astronaut's blog?

What a prize tosser. Even the normally discrete R4 presenters were having trouble not laughing outright.

Do people still think they actually went to the Moon?

Scheesh.

There was something on the other day about that. They showed a photo of one of the astronauts on the step of the landing craft thing, there was a light reflecting off his heel. The sun was on the other side and they said that the astronauts didn;t take any artificial lights, therefore a faked photo.

The photos are hilarious. On several of them the little cross-hairs, which are etched onto the lens, are obscured by the images, amongst other things Interesting....

Top be fair, years ago NASA did claim they'd been "enhanced for effect".

Sorry, but I went to a friend's house to listen to the signals directly from the moon.

He was a researcher in broadcast technology, and his hobby was radio astronomy. For the moon landings he'd borrowed a 4m dish and built receivers for both the main spacecraft and the lunar module frequencies.

We heard the (analogue) sound from the orbiter, could detect the telemetry signal, and also the video, but couldn't resolve those.

The signals from the surface were too weak to be intelligible (even NASA couldn't do that) but they were detectable. They were relayed back to earth via the orbiter.

There was only one place those signals could be coming from - the moon. The satellite technology to forge them didn't exist then.

We weren't the only ones to independently pick those signals up, numerous radio amateurs did so as well.

If the Russians, Chinese and French hadn't independently received the signals from the moon they might possibly have said something.

Of course, the Americans might have recorded the whole thing onto video tape (open reels of 2" tape, maximum 1/2 hour per reel, in those days), sent an unmanned craft into lunar orbit, and played the whole thing back. The man in the moon could have changed the tapes for them!

They have been paying people for years to come out with stuff like that. "I was standing on a long ladder on the night and saw them through Mrs Hudson's binos that she has left over from watching for Nazi parachutists in the War".

They payments were actually accidentally disclosed in the accounts in the mid 70s - they tried to hush it all up, but in the end someone got sacked and scapegoated for making a "mistake".

If they faked it then hats off to the scriptwriters and actors.

Wasn't exactly tricky was it? What were people going to say "it's all a fake - it didn't look like that on Flash Gordon!!".

Build Saturn rocket (most complicated machine ever), depart from earth and go around it a bit then return. I'm assuming no one thinks take-off and return were faked.
Seems an awful lot of effort not to actually land there then fake the photos / footage and keep a lid on it for 40 years.

It's easy when people WANT to believe it. Space race, goddam Commies, Beautiful USofA and all that. No mobile phones, no dig cameras, iffy communications full stop.

It would have been a lot MORE effort to actually land there than not!

People will believe anything. Look at New Labour.
