Yes, it would be possible to orbit a non-spherical object or possibly even a relatively flat object given the correct distance, inertia and relative masses. The point I was trying to illustrate was that earth satellites are effectively free falling forward continually and this precise effect would not happen if the earth was flat.

There was a famous question from the audience at a lecture when it was suggested that the world rested in the back of a turtle. The lecturer responded with the remark 'well, in that case, what is underneath the turtle?' Which immediately elicited the reply 'oh that's easy, it's turtles all the way down'...

(I probably didn't get the precise quotes here but you get the idea).
