Morrissey: Hero to Zero

Undeniably a devisive figure at the best of times, Morrissey was a bit of a hero of mine. As a sullen youth I adored the Smiths and Morrissey in his solo career churned out some crackers too although he's gone a bit shoot recently. I have such happy memories of being thoroughly miserable moaning along with Morrissey.
And then he comes out with this victim blaming nonsense;

Obviously he has a new album and single to promote, but he can surely do better than to spout bollocks like the victims of rape are disappointed.

As I said, he's looking for some publicity. But using the victims of abuse as a lever is dispicable, he even suggests just about everybody is a pedophile.

"If you go through history, almost everyone is guilty of sleeping with minors. Why not throw everyone in jail right away?"

Apparently the interview has been translated from English to German and back again, but I can't see that things have been lost in translation somehow.

He's been a cultural irrelevance for 30 years and here he is being discussed on a forum in a totally unrelated field. Do the math, as the Americans would say.

I've always loved the music but have never liked Morrisey, the way him & Marr treated their other band mates tells you all you need to know about them as people.

This is par for the course for Morrissey.

Back in the early 90s, I got in trouble through sticking up for him after the Finsbury Park debacle and the accusations of racism. Lost a few friends over it. I can laugh about it now but at the time it was terrible...

I was mistaken. There is no defending his views. I can now see him for what he is and I really don't like him one bit.

Besides which, his new record is truly awful, and that is possibly his worst crime of all.

I was a massive fan, still to this day The Queen is Dead is my favorite album.

He needed Johnny Marr to keep him grounded.

Marr is a nasty piece of work as well imo.

No, I was in Leeds at the time. I was gutted to miss it, being a big Madness fan as well, but then I read the aftermath in the NME...

I went to his gig at Sheffield City Hall around the same time and it was a fantastic show - he was still a great performer back then and he had some good musicians working with him. Had to laugh, though, at the fact that on the back of the tickets there was a 2-for-1 voucher for McDonalds. Afterwards, there was a big queue of Moz fans getting their post-gig sustenance at the nearest branch. He must have loved that.

Yeah, the Smiths' songwriting was astonishingly good. Unfortunately he's segued from someone interesting and angry into someone reactionary and predictable.

I saw him in about 2004, on his comeback. He was still making some decent music then.

True, although some of his Smiths material starts to look a bit less savoury when viewed in light of the person he has become. I think the tendencies were always there but he was a bit more ambiguous about his views in those days.
