Hmm. The cynic in me says this is just a good way to shock some more funding out of somewhere...

Although where, I don't know.

The NRM??!!
Somehow I can't see THAT closing!

Also, is there not one of the old Woodhead Electrics (a class 77 that was subsequently sent to work in the Netherlands) in the MOSI? I've never been, but I'd love to see it one day!

Edit: E27001 Ariadne I think.

While I'm all for free admission, perhaps they should adopt a nominal admission fee. Just a couple of quid. After all, NT and I go to the NRM fairly often, but we don't bung the suggested £3 in the donation pot every time I'm afraid. For £1 or £2, we'd still go, I think.

When admission gets up to 5 or 6 pounds, then it becomes more of a barrier, especially for a large family or those on low incomes.

I like free admission for two reasons - firstly I just feel that things should be accessible to all, and secondly it's nice to wander in, look at a couple of things and wander out, without feeling you have to see it all to get your moneys worth - often leaving you rushing round, not taking things in properly. For a pound or two, I'd still feel I could just look at one or two things properly.

Well, if you're ever going to visit it, let us know and we'll come along...

I will do. I rarely go to Manchester though, I normally go past it through Crewe on the way to London!*

* - Liverpool is the same, I just don't go there (I was last there 11 years ago).

Last time I visited the NRM, it cost to get in. Can't now recall but I think it was around 12 for a family ticket. I don't think that alone covered their running costs, they still needed grants and special events.

I remember when admission charges were introduced at the NRM. It drastically reduced the frequency of our visits when were in York. The charging regime lasted for fifteen years and permanently altered my visiting patterns i.e. I rarely visit the place now.

Being pragmatic, it's not that big a deal to have charge admission fees. It's common place in Europe. I didn't bat an eyelid when asked to pay admission fees at the museums that I visited during my cycling holidays in France, Germany, Austria and Hungary and I don't think that there's a compelling reason for charges not to be introduced at the NRM franchises providing that all of the sites introduce admission fees.

The museums and galleries in Paris have one day a month when admission is free and this if adopted along with admission charges, in my opinion, would address the access for all issues linked to low incomes.

I've recently visited MOSI and loved every minute of the visit. Shildon was visited a couple of years ago and I was blown away by the scale and quality of the museum. York is likely to visited twice next month with two separate groups of friends for the 'A4' experience.

I doubt that any of the sites will close but I wonder how much 'fat' can be trimmed from the staffing of the museums and what facilities wil be lost during the restructuring for survival.

I have grand designs on using the archive materials at York when I retire. Sefishly, I hope that this aspect of the NRM's operations survive relatively unscathed.
