ASZ is a made up thing only seen on here. ASL is advanced stop line, referring to the green box. PTW is powered two wheeler, aka motorbike.

I'm not sure ASZ is made up from here. I've seen Advanced stop zone published in some official documents.
It better describes the area that we are talking about. Who cares if other road users are stopping in the line but stop in our zone? RAARARAGGHARAHRAHRA!

ASZ = Advanced stopping zone (the actual area)
ASL = Advanced stopping line (the one drivers shouldnt cross)

The problem about having a go at the motorcyclists, is that the complaint is unprevoked. They havent done anything directly to us and most of them leave room for us to squeeze in. Whenever I see someone doing something they shouldnt, I dont say anything but just give them a dirty look.
They then start trying to figure out why I did that and if needs be, I will point at the ASL.

When I see a car just over the ASL, I normally squeeze in front of them and block them, just to make sure they dont try anything stupid. It usually works and if I am very pissed off at them for doing it, I sometimes set off very slowly, just to annoy them.

Good post Captain Nemo!

On a recent Friday Night Ride, we happened, perchance, on a red light. We stopped - you guessed it, - in the ASA (Area )
Along came Mr Pizza delivery and chugged to the front alongside me. It just so happened that Sgt AKA Bob was next to me having a chat, and without further ado, meandered in front of the Pizzaman and took out his warrant card.

Language difficulties ensued but Sgt was going to get his point across. Keep out of the area if you are a powered vehicle.

While we're at it, let's get all motorbikes out of bus lanes - too noisy, to fast, too quick to brake and the exhaust points straight at one's face.
I'm just whinging now, because the school run is going to restart, and will demand extra vigilance.
And the conkers and acorns on the roads - be careful everyone.

I'm afraid I have to disagree a bit with you there Matthew. Perhaps my view of PTW's is a little skewed by the fact that on my commute to work, I use one ASL in the mornings in York Road, Bristol, and another ASL (the one in my video clip) on my way home. Both are near to large motorbike dealers which Bristol cyclists will know (the one across from the main station). So I guess that's why they barge into the ASL a lot on my commute. And some can get quite aggressive about it too. I have known 2-3 of them to filter 200 yards along the line of cars and try to squeeze into the ASL next to me, often expecting you to move over. But as I'm going straight on, I can't use the left hand side of the ASL as its a left turn lane. So the ASL is reduced to 50% capacity and I'm faced with two or even three large PTW's with panniers competing for space. Bottom line is that I can legally be there on red, they can't.

For me, it's not a question of them leaving enough room for me, it's the fact that they shouldn't be there to begin with and I suspect a lot of them know that but choose to ignore the rule, which puts cyclists at risk. It also encourages other PTW's to do the same, which isn't what cycling needs.

I speak from experience of being cut up by the biker last year, of having a group of teen scooter riders appear all around me (on left and right) etc. But what I dislike the most is when they pull up to you, give you a dirty look as they go past (just what do they expect to find in the cyclist safety zone?. Godzilla on a skateboard?) and place themselves over the second line (traffic offence) on red. Then they rev their engines continually, which is pretty pointless and a waste of fuel. But since many motorbikes have exhausts that are angled upwards, I think they do it to spray fumes at you for being in 'their' territory. I find those wannabe boy racers on their 'Ninja' bikes especially annoying for doing this (I'd love to get my own back by farting into their crash helmets  ).

I don't generally have a problem with vans and cars rolling a bit over the line as they need to stop safely. But a filtering PTW has light-years to stop and no excuse.

But I do the same thing as you Matthew for drivers who decide to nip down the 24 hour bus lanes - ride very slowly to get the message across

ASL "reservoir" used to be the preferred nomenclature, but I have noticed a drift towards ASL "zone" recently.

When I used to be a tosspot on a scooter before seeing the light, I had an argument with a cyclist about being in an ASL. My argument being that the tax disc on my scooter showed "Bicycle" therefore I was entitled to use the ASL  .

Of course I was wrong and just arguing for the sake of it :troll:

are they allowed in the ASLs on the A23? I don't begrudge them those, because, to be honest, driving a PTW from Brixton to the Oval is terrifying. If they make it to the Oval they deserve a bit of a break.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
I tend to be fairly relaxed about motorbikes in ASZs in Central London - mainly because it gets the buggers out of my way a damn sight quicker and more safely than if they stop legally and then barge through once the lights have changed.

Not to my knowledge. I haven't been on the a23 outside of Croydon for quite some time. Are there even any asl's between Brixton and oval? Only by the church at the end?

As I hinted at in a previous post of mine. If the asl is not painted correctly then it could be perfectly legal for a motorcyclist to enter and stop in it whilst the light is red.

I noticed on the first blackfriars bridge ride that the asl outside of tfl by the cut is not painted correctly and as kind as motorcyclists entered it from the side then they where perfectly entitled to go in it.

I'm personally filtering to the very front less and less because of this. More often than not the asl is full of cyclists and motorcyclists so it is intact unsafe for me to do so. I am also not a fan of some of modded scooters and motorcyclists which appear to be rather loud.

My post was so good it got posted twice

Whislt this is here I shall make use of it.

I recently told a troll that I do have an engine, a two stroke!
A set of massive legs made up of muscles that require calories to be burnt for them to function. I am a PTW with a bicycle between my legs.
