Hi Gaz,
Hope the injury is healing well. Concerning your post about correct painting of the ASZ, I had a look at Blackfriars on Googly Earth and, frankly, it looks like a drunk spider wandered through some road paint. The whole place is a mess. What did you mean by incorrect painting?. Is it the absence of a feeder cycle lane?.
Whatever the HC may or may not say, the underlying legislation is written in terms of vehicles not motor vehicles, so your argument would be invalid. The only thing wrong with your second sentence above is the inclusion of the word "almost"Lets face it, most ASZ's in the UK are badly designed anyway, most without feeder lanes and so technically illegal for us to use on red. Which would also render them almost useless. However, since HC 178 states that all motorists, including motorcyclists, must stop at the first white line on red, what's the position on cyclists?. I would argue that since we are human powered and have no engine, we aren't really motorists and so can use the ASZ without a feeder lane.
Thanks for clearing that up Gaz. I know that ASZ, it's just along from the Travelodge where I'm currently staying!. I usually cross over there to get to the tube station.
Is it legal for a cyclist to enter the ASZ on red if it has no feeder lane?. I'm a bit confused about this one. It seems that if the ASZ has no feeder lane, then the only way you can use it would be to be crossing through it when the lights change and you stop, or, if you are filtering past jammed traffic and the lights are green but nobody is moving and you get into the box as the lights change.

It would seem that a small amendment to the RTA is needed that would allow cyclists to enter on red.
Cheek Would I lie to you ?
