Hi Gaz,

Hope the injury is healing well. Concerning your post about correct painting of the ASZ, I had a look at Blackfriars on Googly Earth and, frankly, it looks like a drunk spider wandered through some road paint  . The whole place is a mess. What did you mean by incorrect painting?. Is it the absence of a feeder cycle lane?.

Anyway, here is a link to the ASZ on York Road in Bristol where I usually work. I go straight ahead from here, so I have to be in the right hand half of the box as the left hand section (where the plastic fencing is) is now for turning left only. This ASZ can be a problem if I'm sitting waiting for the lights to change and I hear the BRRRRRRRRMMMMM of an approaching PTW ('angry wasp' if it's a scooter  ). The other ASZ is just around the corner, slightly hidden from view. I prefer to go home this way as it avoids coming east along the main road. What you can't see is a back street behind the houses, parallel to the main road, leading to a little cycle lane which allows you to emerge onto St. Luke's Road which is the road that feeds into the junction from the left.

The absence of a feeder lane is one possible way, but that means that cyclists can't enter it legally.
The box i was referring to is this one. Notice how on the side of it there isn't a solid line, so any motorcyclists filtering down the side of the traffic can legally drive into it whilst the light is red as long as they go through the gap in the paint.

Edit: I know that someone will probably point out the chevron area that motorcyclists will have to filter through to get to the ASL. Whilst you shouldn't go in those, it's not against the law unless it is boded with a solid white line. See HC Rule 130

Thanks for clearing that up Gaz. I know that ASZ, it's just along from the Travelodge where I'm currently staying!. I usually cross over there to get to the tube station.

Is it legal for a cyclist to enter the ASZ on red if it has no feeder lane?. I'm a bit confused about this one. It seems that if the ASZ has no feeder lane, then the only way you can use it would be to be crossing through it when the lights change and you stop, or, if you are filtering past jammed traffic and the lights are green but nobody is moving and you get into the box as the lights change.

Lets face it, most ASZ's in the UK are badly designed anyway, most without feeder lanes and so technically illegal for us to use on red. Which would also render them almost useless. However, since HC 178 states that all motorists, including motorcyclists, must stop at the first white line on red, what's the position on cyclists?. I would argue that since we are human powered and have no engine, we aren't really motorists and so can use the ASZ without a feeder lane.

It would seem that a small amendment to the RTA is needed that would allow cyclists to enter on red.

Whatever the HC may or may not say, the underlying legislation is written in terms of vehicles not motor vehicles, so your argument would be invalid. The only thing wrong with your second sentence above is the inclusion of the word "almost"

If a cyclist has to go over a solid white line to get into the ASL, then they can not enter it whilst the light is red.

As dan said, it the TSRGD Reg 43. It states vehicle and not motor vehicle.

I have many ASZ's near me but none of them have feeder lanes.
A selection of badly designed ones:
Number 1
Number 2
Number 3

(Hope this works)

Apart from the 2nd one, they are all fine. There doesn't have to be a feeder lane for it to be legit. As long as the solid line doesn't go all the way across the box then you can enter it legally at the point where the line is broken. As can a motorcyclist.

Looks similar to the one I pointed out earlier, technically it's only legal for them to enter it if they do so by not crossing the solid white stop line or a solid white boundary line around the box. In that example there is gap in the side where a motorcyclist can enter.

Is this still like this?
