Taking the biscuit

hmm my other half cycles in the middle of hte bus lane where-as i tend to go closer in to the kerb. I think, maybe, if the roads were of a better condition then it would not be so much of an issue.

I aslo think everytime you give in a little and they take away something then people will take advantage and take more. (i know this don't make much sense, but im trying here lol) Bikes already encroach into cycle lanes and into ASL's, as do taxis. Now they are in bus lanes, i think the tendency of human nature is to try and push the limits a bit more. hmmmm still dont make much sense does it. I know what i mean though lol. Everyone tries to push the bounderies a little to see how much they can get away with. oh dear, i think i will give up on this one as head isnt screwed on today.

I hear what you're saying, it does make sense and I heartily agree.

One thing to remember is that as long as you cycle assertively with clear indication of your intentions it would be only a total maniac who would have any chance to causing you harm.

Now I can't deny there are a few maniacs out there and have encountered many in my years but they are of a significant minority to not put me off cycling on the roads.

Guess Bus Lanes need to be treated in the same way that one would deal with "normal" roads now.

hmmm perhaps that is my problem. I feel relatively safe in bus lanes. The only things i have to worry about is potholes, buses and texis, plus the odd idiot and yes, your right, now its going to be like the rets of the road. There will be a lot more overtaking stationary buses, in the past I have felt bullied by other drivers not to pull out and overtake till they have gone past me and the bus.

Except that they won't be like "normal roads": they'll allow motorbikes to go much faster than they can on normal, more congested lanes, leading to greater speed differentials and more problems for both pedestrians and cyclists.

+ 1 on that, Jake.

This is one of the reasons why I am opposed to motorbikes in bus lanes.

I also think we tend to be our own worst enemy because we do not make enough fuss when we see such encroachments. This is veering off topic but compare the amount of police time and local press coverage given to (a) complaints about cyclists by pedestrians and (:birthday: complaints about motorised road users by cyclists.

After our local cycling campaign meetings there is always an opportunity to share horror stories (rather like on here) but when challenged about whether they took it up with the police or fired a letter off to the local press, the usual response is "What's the point?"

Well, the point is if we do nothing then others will assume that nothing is wrong and we will continue to see the erosions that Jake mentions going on and on. Especially when the police and the councillors (via the local press) keep hearing about concerns about dangerous cycling and rarely hear the cyclists' concerns.

Luckily there are people on here and in my local group willing to take action and not give in. We all need to do this. At the very least we need to make sure we record any and every incident of dangerous behaviour by PTWs in bus lanes during the trial period.

(rant over and finally getting back on topic!)
