Mountain Bike Cyclists, why don't you have lights?

I've highlighted a relevant part of your first sentence that you didn't reiterate in the second.

I know Dan but I stare at bikes! It was a well-lit road, the city end of Dereham Road in Norwich. It's just that you KNOW a driver will say "Couldn't see it" and you won't get any justice or compensation, even if it wasn't your fault. Good LEDs are cheap as chips, who risks over a grand for the sake of a fiver?

You could argue that most idiots ride a mountain bike at night...

Most of the idiots I've known don't ride a mountain bike at night. That doesn't impede their idiocy very much, though.

Personally my issue is with dog walkers ... dark colours, no HiViz, no lights, and if I hit them because I have not seen them they opening a whole world of trauma by failing to wear a helmet

... and that is just the dog!

I nearly had a head on with a middle aged guy on a cycle path last night . I had my light pointing down so I didn't blind on coming drivers and he had no lights . I only saw him when he was about two foot in front of me . I let him know he was an idiot btw .

See plenty of road bike in the dusk without, and many more on pavements at night ect.............
Same here, I see heaps of road bike riders with tiny, very inadequate lights, almost as if they're afraid of the weight penalty of using proper lights. So they're putting convenience ahead of safety, which is pretty stupid.

During these winter months I have the 3m spoke reflectors on all my spokes, a front Cree T6 mount permanently on the handle bars at least one rear light attached and after getting a light set from Aldi, I always go out with at least one front light, but its getting to the stage where the T6 will be attached permanently, 70-80% of the time its carried in the saddle bag anyway, along with a pair of light weight commuter over shoes that fold up quite small, these have a reflective strip on the back, mind you even with all this I have been missed by the odd motorist.

Almost every cyclist I come across on my night rides are missing one or both lights. I did see one cyclist stopped at traffic lights the other night though with the right lights, just the wrong way around, white on back and red on front

I (road bike) now have two rear and two front lights; I only use one of the rear lights though.

On Halloween evening, I saw about 20 teenage twats mostly on BMXs cycling in the dark, no lights, on the pavement & in the road road on the wrong side of the A4. I was hoping a bus would have taken them out.
