MTB shoes . . and pebbles

I wear MTB shoes on my commute so that I don't have to waddle when I need to walk anywhere. They are prone to picking up pebbles - but can anyone beat this one?

I didn't notice it until I sounded like a one legged lady in high heals walking across the car park.
