MTBs and Shimano front mech codes

hello all...am sprucing up my old MTB....have got a 9 speed setup in mind...is there a Shimano code to identify their front mechs for a mountain bike ?
Also, which set of brake/shifters is ok for general road use ? Are EZ51's ok to use generally ?

Any 9spd front mech will fit - as long as you get the right swing & pull - a lot of dual pull now & come with shims for different width of frame tube

You need 9 speed shifters/brakes and I think the ones you quote (?EF51) are not 9 speed.

It is easier as well to get separate brake levers and shifter pods rather than the combined ones - but why bother going to 9 and not 10 as it is more current
