Right, when I was a kid, mulled wine was something you'd heard about, and it was associated with 'not us' (i.e. toffs and the like)

Now, thanks to John Prescott saying so, we are all middle class, apparently, so bl00dy everybody does it from now till January. Mrs F has just wasted 2 perfectly good bottles of wine making a mulled concoction for some friends she's got round... none of them actually drink that much, so I'll probably drink most of it, then Mrs F will moan at me for doing so, and I'll say well, nobody else was going to touch it.

I like it a bit, but it's inescapable... whenever we get invited into someone's house for the next month, there'll be a big flipping pan of it, and nobody (except me) will be drinking it.

Same with mince pies... I love them, and everyone has them, but nobody eats them (ooh, I daren't, I've had two this week... get lost mate, I've had three in the last 10 minutes).

Grr. Yum.

I first tried it in Prague several years ago when me and Mrs GM went there for a Birthday treat. It was freezing cold -6, so we thought we would try some to warm us up. Mrs GM liked it, but it didn't agree with me. I felt like being a pavement pizza artist.

I was introduced to it at uni many many years ago ... and I love the stuff ... it's one of the essential smells of Christmas and is always served at Christmas time in this house .... and then I drink the leftovers for the next few days.

There's your problem.

I bought a lot of Glühwein when I was in Germany. It was about a pound a litre, and was lovely. A pound a litre is the end of the market that you should be targeting, not perfectly good bottles. ^_^

Nobody gets to mull the wine I bought back from France  Ok, so my ceiling was 3euros a bottle but it's all carefully selected.. Bordeaux mostly.

I've had some that I've really liked and plenty that weren't so good. Even the not so good stuff was ok. Mostly ok.

One house today, had put out a binbagful of mulled wine bottles. 38 of them. I just hope it was the aftermath of a church social, or something, and not one person's intake....

it is crap. Everybody is too polite to say so when given this. The host then thinks that everybody likes and an unfortunate cycle is born.

Aldi sell ready-made (I mean it's ready-mixed, not that it's in a self-heating bottle or a Thermos or something) Gluwein at about £3.00.
It's really rather good, and makes ace poached pears too.
