I got a 4x4,, (only used it 3 times in the past 3 weeks, don't want to drive now, i find any excuse to use the bike now  ), but its got a Ford Mondeo engine in it, so its no more polluting than a 2ltr car, yet it comes under fire for being a 4x4

What cracks me up is the save the world hippy convoy who drive petrol/diesel guzzling old coaches/lorries, which cause more pollution that anything else!!!!

Your Mum should have nutted her and driven away sharpish with the lights off to obscure number plate recognition. That's what I usually do anyway.

It all depends on how you calculate the pollution.

If you measure it against time you'll probably find that it's lower than more modern vehicles as the 'hippy convoy' spends a lot of time parked up and stationary.

If you measure it against distance travelled then yes the 'hippy convoy' is more polluting.

Do 'hippy convoys' still exist?

Do we really need to have the climate change debate here? Do we? Before we discuss the fact that the title sounds like a promise of some really filthy porn and totally fails to deliver? Honestly?

It's thread drift.

A common phenomenon in forums.

Back to the 'hippy convoys'...

I wonder what happened to the infamous Peace Convoy.

Buy a Landrover.

> Small dents and scratches are 'features' on a Landrover

> You get to know the local osteopaths very well as you search for relief from permanent backache.
> It matters not that every landrover ever made has one lighting fault or another as the indicators are too small to see anyway.

At last, someone with something sensible to say on here.

Looks like you'll have to resort to those old VHS tapes on the top of the wardrobe eh Tilly? ;)

True the engines are the same but the vehicles are heavier and less aerodynamic, there is more energy absorbed within the transmission and the bigger more knobbly tyres create more rolling friction. They are a totally unnecessary waste of fuel.

However their environmental impact is only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to these unnecessary vehicles. Drivers feel invincible in them (note how many 4x4ers use mobile phones when driving) and as such they take less care and tend to be involved in a disproportionate amount of accidents, as 4x4s are bigger and heavier when they are involved in an accident they cause more damage and injuries to other road users. Not only are they burning up precious fossil fuels they are casing carnage and killing people.

As 4x4s are more intimidating (mixture of size and aggressive driving) to others road users, other road users unwittingly get caught up in this arms race and buy larger cars than necessary. Thus 4x4ers are causing others to drive vehicles that are less economical than they would otherwise of bought. They cause others to use more fuel than needed.

At the end of the day 4x4ers could well be the biggest environmental disaster ever.

That is without doubt the biggest load of rubbish I have ever read.

Many new 4x4's have a very low drag coefficient, most run on road tyres and can achieve over 30 mpg. Drivers are no more likely to use mobiles while driving, no more likely to to take less care and are not involved in more accidents. Being flat fronted they are kinder to pedestrians if they impact, have a higher driving position/view which allows the driver to see more ahead. They are no more intimidating than a van or similar and do not make other people buy larger vehicles.

In reality, they are a very safe form of transport for the user, very practical for a family and fantastic in the bad weather. They accelerate slower and tend to be driven at a lower top speed.

Get a grip!

Given the lack of modern accoutrements in my Land Rover, I feel very vulnerable when driving him and he seldom goes much over 40mph. I couldn't use a phone I wanted to because of the noise inside. It takes about a year for him to get through a tank of fuel, at around 40mpg.

He has a few dents but I think most of them are from objects around the farm. He seems generally benevolent, more the coffee and cakes type than one for causing carnage. I'm fairly sure that he hasn't killed anyone. He does wave at other Land Rovers, though, and makes a great rolling road block for the odd peleton which I've followed round here.

He doesn't hold grudges, though, and he does take other people at face value, including the few cyclists that he has carried when in a moment of need.

The more I know people, the more I like my Land Rover.

That sums it up really, any vehicle for personal or family transport getting less than 60mpg should not be on the road
I think that does rather sum up the hypocrisy, as you'd need to be looking at very new cars to get over 60mpg on the road.

Blimey, I thought I was logging on to CycleChat, not the Daily Mail.

4x4's aren't perfect, but sweeping generalisations like accusing their drivers of greater mobile phone use and taking less care while driving takes this debate nowhere.

Not at all Norm, Montyboy was referring to new, to quote him

"Many new 4x4's have a very low drag coefficient, most run on road tyres and can achieve over 30 mpg"

there for to compare to new cars achieving +60mpg was fair.

I think you will find it very hard to find many new cars that will achieve 60 mpg
