to quote from the article in the Independent

"The researchers found drivers of 4x4s were almost four times more likely to be seen using hand-held mobiles. They were also less likely to use seat belts."

and certainly from my own observation see more mobile use by 4x4 drivers than I do by car drivers, and their are a lot more cars than 4x4s

Oh in that case, it must be true!

Whilst I am no fan of la chelsea tractor, they alone do not cause climate change.

If we were going to make a significant difference, we would need to stop pretty much all air travel, shipping, eating meat and vastly reduce our consumption of energy.

I'm not going to get all waggy finger on you, as I am as bad as the next person.

Yes, that would be the article in the Independent based on research carried out by Sian Berry of Imperial College. Sian Berry, who is also a Green Party activist and founder of the Alliance Against Urban 4x4's.

a large merc estate causes more pollution than a merc 4 x 4

most large estate cars are doing a similar mpg to 4 x 4's

some people need a large estate car to carry family and kit about, other people don't

I've just bought a small estate that can do 70mpg, however, given the 1.2L diesel engine, I wouldn't want to tow anything heavy with it, for that I'd want an engine that's got a bit more power behind it, unfortunately that drops the mpg.

the attitude towards low emission cars is changing, partly down to people's wallets, but people are starting to look at what they actually need and deciding accordingly.

Sian is a lady name. Sion would be a boy name.

I am getting a bit bored of all these names and variations that are around nowadays.

My dad has a 3.2L Mercedes E-class CDI and he barely gets 45mpg.

My mum has a 1.2 Corsa but she has been trying so hard to drive it as efficiently as possible, she has caused the engine some aggro by not using the revs as much. She keeps it under 2000/3000 when she should really be going up to 4000/5000 before changing gear.
I dont know how much her mpg is but I would expect it is about 50/60.

Blimey, I thought I was logging on to CycleChat, not the Daily Mail.

4x4's aren't perfect, but sweeping generalisations like accusing their drivers of greater mobile phone use and taking less care while driving takes this debate nowhere.

Yesterday I was tailgated by one for miles along the A1079 because I was observing the speed limit (it is a notoriously dangerous road).

I don't like being tailgated at all but when it's a 4x4 it just seems to be adding to the bullying effect. Probably why they are less popular than many vehicles.
