Just looking at the OS map, the climb back you must have taken back up from Knaresborough (marked as Harrogate Ringway) looks steeper in places than the A59. Though a good deal more pleasant, no doubt. Anyhow, I was over in Starbeck and Ripley about 3 weeks ago.

The Beryl Burton cycleway is steep. Often you find cyclists walking and a combination of its narrowness, walkers and dogs leads to the potential for having to stop. As it becomes open to one side away from the steep part of the climb the prevailing wind direction is typically unhelpful.

The A59 in contrast is more sheltered and when I am heading south or west, when north of Knaresborough, the wind is usually the determinate as to whether I go via Knaresborough or Ripley.

It slightly annoying that there is no connection between the B6165 and the Nidderdale Greenway where the routes are very close, there is an unofficial way through a private farm I have noted MTBers use from tracking on Strava.

Consequently at Ripley using the A61 to cross the Nidd rather than the Greenway is something I often do due to the shorter mileage home.
Oddly enough, I didn't find the climb from Knaresborough up to Bilton on the cycleway too bad - from what I remember it was more of a short, sharp hill rather than the drag of the A59 downhill - although I was on a test ride of a bike from Spa Cycles with unfamiliar (lower) gearing which may have made it easier.

It can certainly be a struggle, that's where I realised there was something wrong with a new cassette I had put on, mistakenly fitted a 11-30 instead of a 11-32 and the difference showed, made it by a very rare use of standing on the pedals.

Bad news @Jenkins it's raining in Kent. I've looked outside and have just finished breakfast in bed and deciding on whether to attempt going out on the bike. Very windy too.

I've just had a look at the rain radar and it's dry in the area where I'm heading to (Brands Hatch, about 5 mins from the Swanley Interchange on the M25). Please keep the rain in your part of the county ^_^

'spoons are open. Bit early for cycling or drinking for me. Thanks to keen types like you,
I can exercise vicariously.

It was pure tap water as that's all I drink when riding and early rides are magical.

Watched a tawny owl patrolling a field for a good minute, seen numerous muntjac, squirrels, heron and numberous other wildlife all whilst majority of people are sleeping.
