Good luck ! PS Does he manage OK with normal glasses on the bike ? - Assume that's him on the front above ? I could never get on with standard glasses on the bike, so I've always had RX inserts.

You're right - it is him on the Ridley. He's comfortable with normal glasses, as am I. That's possibly because we're both very short-sighted, although I do wear an old round pair of glasses on the bike which I find more comfortable.

Yes you can get on the train if it's no ticket machine. If it's has one then you need to get Promise to Pay notice from the machine. Which allows you to get on a train and pay the 1st chance you get. Either on the train or a ticket office (if it's got one) when you get off.
With out you may get fined for trying to fare dodge.
Unless it's a "Penalty Pay Station", in which you stand a good chance of being charged the penalty fare on top of the ticket you should have bought before travelling.

Looking at the list the smaller stations that are down to keep them are prime commuter belt. Otherwise they'd be toast too.
Even then opening hours will be cut.
I "broke" one of the ticket machines at the local station earlier this year. During the tailend of the morning rush hour.
I have this odd effect on electronic equipment at times. Most notably in supermarkets, where the PDQ machines are put/knocked out of service by simply putting my hand near them. Most in one go was 16 machines in one go, the local Tesco earlier this year. Only cash payments possible after I'd been in.

My ATM card jammed in a machine in Dublin once. It must have been worn as my card had got a little out of line and caught on the edge of the slot. I tried to use my house key to straighten the card up so it would come out but they were too thick. I couldn't find anything in my pockets to use.

It was daytime and the bank was open, so in my innocence, I walked up to the counter and explained what happened and asked the cashier if she had a knife, or a nail file or anything I could use to retrieve my card. For some reason, she wasn't very impressed with the idea of sticking knives into their ATM and refused to help. I can't think why! She just wrote down all the details and it took about two weeks for them to post me my card back again.
