I too like the Mikado we did it one year as the school play. It was the 1st one that me and one of science teachers did the lighting for. We worked on many others over the next few years of my school life. Rewiring and renewing lighting rigs was great fun as was keeping the whole ageing set up going. It was consent fault finding, fixing and finding work arounds for obsolete parts. No way now would a school let a student get up that close to electrics let alone poke around them.

I rather liked Patience and The Mikado. I saw a horrible film version of Pirates of Penzance, kind of soured me on it. I saw Trial by Jury and found it funny as well. But just saw that on YouTube.

Yes, that is true. I liked the film better than the book, myself. I read the book while a family member was having surgery.

We "did" the book for English literature. Being taught the answers not to understand it or enjoy it was not a great experience.
Later learning about him as an author and all the other stuff he did was quite another matter
His daughter's biography does a reasonable job
