Right, we haven't had one of these for a while.
1) Kirstie, did you enjoy all the cds that got recommended last time?
2) Any recommendations - I am enjoying: Mirrored by Battles and End Note by Enablers at the moment:
Battles - math rock weirdness, a wonder to see live - change time signatures every few bars, have a vocalist who is made unrecognisable by more effects that you can shake a stick at, but still make absolutely incredible tunes.
Enablers - San Francisco 'power trio' with a beat poet as a vocalist. The music crescendos around the poetry and builds up incredible songs which are deeply visceral.

I also like this website: Free albums galore!. This is one of a massively expanding series of blogs that offers open licence music (download for free), or deleted music: in certain cases the artists do sell the cds too, so do buy one and support their work. But still free albums, which is beautiful. A good one, near the top on the site is a jazz album by Tom La Meche, a French guitarist, who offers up Pat Metheny style music but far more accessible to the casual listener. Good stuff.

Let's get a resource library going.

i'm currently obsessed with
Midlake - trials of van occupanther.
Cherry Ghost - thirst for romance

new edwyn collins is also good.

have you got the Guillemots album? another slightly weird one, with added popness.

Yes thanks Sam - when they all turned up, that is, as they took a while with the post strike and all. I want to get hold of some Battles stuff as someone else recommended them to me a while ago. Anyway they were all brilliant - I'm just listening to Modest Mouse 'in detail' (as you do), and I've managed to work through all of the others as well. My favourite is Mogwai, and I definitely want to get more of their stuff. Them and the mighty Lau of course, who I've seen live twice in the last fortnight...they only have one CD out which belies their general brilliance and all round awesomeness. I think I'm entering into a Scottish music phase, but stop me if I ever get to Big Country and The Proclaimers...and I'm thinking of going to Celtic Connections festival in January to see Lau (again), Bellowhead and Flook, but might go cycle touring instead. Who knows?

Kirstie - cheers for reminding me, must book those Lau tickets when they're at the 'Reekie.

At the moment I'm well into Squarepusher's latest album 'Hello Everything'...it's like 'Prog' Drum 'n' Bass with a jazzy feel to it. Also borrowed the soundtrack to 'La Haine' - I never knew that early 90's French hip-hop could be so good! (I'm serious!).

How about "Quirk" by Fat and Frantic, (particularly The Senators Daughter) now on itunes. Blimey it took me right back to the Beer Keller in Bristol in about 1991, what a great night:biggrin:
Mother of Christ! Fat and Frantic? Takes me back to a bash at Rolle College, Exmouth around the same time. I seem to recall a song called 'Not Enough Naked Men' and one of them mashing a bananananana on my head. I may have been very drunk (pick any five nights from seven:blush:.

Latest tunes round here come courtesy of Dragonforce. Do please watch and enjoy the vids. I'm sure they take it very seriously but it's majestically silly.

I will be mostly ignoring this thread as it's payday tomorrow and I'm supposed to be saving up for Christmas presents (and some Ay-up lights).

Can I set my computer to ban me from linking to Amazon?

My favourite Mogwai is 'Government Commissions', a compilation of their Peel Sessions. Good overview of the back catalgoue, and it starts with an intro by the brilliant John Peel: only a sentence, but still brilliant to hear his voice. You may also enjoy Explosions in the Sky along that vein too - some people think they're dull, I don't; Do Make Say Think as well (avoid the latest album, as it isn't brilliant - Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord is Dead is a good one though - they're on Constellation Records, the world's premier Post-Rock record label). No post-rock is as good as the mighty Godspeed though, but I shall have to shut up about them soon.
I'm back onto Modest Mouse after a wee break, still excellent although I've only got Good News up here with me (most of my cds are at my folks). Still a great album though.
I have the first Proclaimers album on vinyl: surprisingly good actually - a hangover of my recent 80s pop phase, which thankfully I passed through without too much trouble.

I am obviously of a different planet as I have not one iota of a clue what the feck you are talking about.
I will however be sending out a search party on the a.m.
If I find ought I will report back.

That'll be due to "Last Night my Wife Hoovered my Head"

I've always wanted to know who made that song! It's been troubling me since I was ten and our primary school teacher played it to us in assembly. The things you learn, eh?

French hiphop is the discerning hiphoppers choice. They didn't go into the whole gangster thing (although they seem to have recently gone there, unfortunately), and the lyrical flow is far better. No idea what they're rapping about, but I don't know with normal hiphop (Or in the great words of the Flight of the Conchords: 'I don't rap about bitches and hos, I rhyme about witches and trolls'). got La Haine coming from Love Film soon, still not seen it.

German hiphop works really well too as they have to make it fit the grammar and so they usually end up sounding quite intelligent and interesting especially on the slower stuff. Then you see a video and there they are wearing the usually crap hiphop dresscode and pathetically making the tedious hand gestures, which is why in the end it is just shite like the US stuff. Sad really, the cultural imitation I mean, it would be a lot more convincing if they were content with looking like who they are.

Elmer I am with you totally lost as to who these new fangled beat combos are. Although I have seen La Haine.

Is it just me or are there only about 5 albums on that free albums galore site??

Apologies, I feel that I can be knowingly obscure at times - it's all part of my pretentious charm. It comes from a dislike of a great deal of what mainstream music has to offer.

It's just you, it's is archived monthly and there are at least 50 within the last three months. Some are quite niche and I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole, others are really quite good. If you hunt, there are a lot of music blogs around and about specialising in all the different music you can think of.
