Ironic given my thread yesterday about crossing the river safely but I had an accident this evening, on Lambeth Bridge. Waiting to get on to the roundabout at Horseferry Road on the northside to go south and I feel a nudge to my back end, then the nudge quickly becomes a shove, I managed to get off quickly and turn to see the car behind basically crushed my rear mudguard and buckled my wheel. Despite hi viz and 3 red lights on my back, he 'didn't see me cos he was looking at the traffic coming from the right'.

He was kind enough to give me a lift home and he gave me his details and pay for any damage.

This is my 2nd accident in less than 2 years of cycling, I wasn't hurt but I'm now thinking is it really worth it, what's gonna happen to me next time? I'm very shaken right now so maybe it's just that...

Something I didn't notice till I got home and watched the video footage was that there was a police van passing that definitely must have seen the stopped traffic and a cyclist stood in front of a car, and they did nothing.

Wow,sorry mate. I don't like the bridges, most have flaws. For example Southwark Bridge is shocking at the South end going North with a dip where the buses and lorries have dug into the tarmac.

Driving standards in the uk really do seem to be going down the toilet - glad you're ok though. Looked like that could have been a lot worse.

Make sure the halfwit covers the damage costs if you can. A lot of them are apologetic at the scene and go oddly quiet in the following days.

He seemed nice enough but we'll see how much it costs, on the phone the bike shop said they need to do a condition report to see what damage is done.

Does seem f'd up that you can be stationary, lights flashing etc and bear in mind sat on the bike, I'm taller than him... and yet he didn't notice me there. Kinda makes u wonder what the point of lights and hi-viz are, some people won't see u whatever u do.

It's rubbish isn't it?
Given the traffic conditions I'd be tempted to approach that junction from along (is it Millbank there or) the Embankment. You'd be turning left onto the bridge so wouldn't have to cross over the roundabout. Is that a possible workaround for you? Personally I don't see any shame whatsoever in walking the bike if I felt the need.
