My card's been scammed

I've just got a text from my bank telling me my debit card has been scanned for nearly 500 quid! The bank told me to contact a certain number. I phoned them but it says that the number i called from hasn't been recognised. Will i have to stand the fraud/theft?

first of all, are you 100% sure the text is from your bank

Why did they text you? Sounds a scam in itself. Hope you didnt enter your account number into the phone for them to ID you.

No i didn't that was my first thought. When i phoned the number it said welcome to (won't name bank yet)fraud department. Surely it must be genuine?

ask yourself this question first , have you given your bank your mobile number

Why would a bank text me this question?

Why would they think it's unusual to spend that amount?

Can i name the bank and the store it was used in?

Wouldn't the bank phone rather than text when they are investigating fraud?
