looking at the pictures doesn't it already have a Tubus cargo carrier rack, it is the same shape as mine and comes as standard with a galaxy.

Nope, compare more carefully. This looks like some pretty flimsy aluminium affair. It will be fine for light touring, however.

Why is the down tube larger? Is it a necessary function of 631?

looks like a 2007 model to me.great all round bike the galaxy.what a bargain at 250 quid!!!!

The down tube is stressed most of the three central frame tubes, and it is the most important tube if you want to avoid excessive frame flex, especially when loaded. Nearly all frames therefore have a larger diameter down tube, even with traditional non-oversized tubing. I agree that it is sometimes overdone these days.
