Completed the Wiggle New forest 100 this weekend why was my first ever imperial century ride.

I live in south Wales, where i've always thought the real hill climbers are made! Gotta say, the word undulating has a much more sinister meaning than i first realised!

Where I live, you tend to have some serious climbing in parts of a ride so i thought a ride down south with those "undulating" hills would be fairly straight forward.

Undulating, it turns out is posh for little and often. Not a single categorised climb for the entire route but good lord did my legs hurt!!!

If anyone is interested the route I rode is here

Well done . Im still waiting to get my first century. One of my season goals but am running out of time this year.

I did the New Forest ride last year but did the 75m route. One of the better wiggle sportives I have done.

I did a 100 miler last year around Kent, Surrey and Sussex for the area's air ambulance. Only a handful of cat 4 climbs according to Strava, but mostly "undulating" for 6,000 feet of climbing.

Would love to cycle round the New Forest or Isle of Wight next year.

I managed my imperial century for the year last week - from near Bristol, through Corsham, Laycock, Wootton Basset etc.
I thought it would be relatively flat once I got up the Cotswold scarp. Had forgotten to take the Wiltshire downs into account.
Only 3800 ft of up, but a tad more than I had been expecting!

Well done!
We did a swap: While you were in the South, finding it surprisingly hilly, I was in the Brecon Beacons, finding it unsurprisingly hilly. I managed 1300m (4,200ft) in just 50 miles. So I think your comment about real hill climbers in S Wales has some merit!

Was that the Evans ride? If so it takes in one of my most feared hills! Known locally as the Glyn, it's about a mile long and kicks up into the 20% mark a few times.

Is that the one at the end of Talybont Resevoir? It was indeed a swine of a hill. I stopped once to catch my breath, and once to help out another rider who had problems with her gears (a convenient excuse for a rest)

ohhhhhhh yes. It's practically on my doorstep (merthyr) - for a long time i cycled an extra 20 miles (the reverse of your route i think, llangynidr mountain way) just to avoid it on the return!

Good work on the evans ride - very tasty route

I failed miserably trying to cycle the Glyn about 2 weeks ago. To be fair to myself I did have 15kg of luggage in my panniers and I only started cycling at the end of May... Next year I might have to go back and test how much better my fitness has got!
